The Most Important Fly Fishing Article You'll Ever Read

https://midcurrent.fliesforsale.com/the-most-important-fly-fishing-article-youll-ever-read/?ffst=43i3n-dhdk

While we all fly fish for a lot of reasons, we all share one primary goal; to catch more fish.  Wherever you are in your fly fishing career, you can always improve and learn more.  I’m going to share with you today something I wish I had known back when I first started fly fishing over 15 years ago.  I’m going to teach you a simple strategy that you can keep in your mind while on the river that will help you figure out how to catch fish anytime, anywhere.  The framework I’ll teach you will also help you find where you are strong and where you are weak in your fly fishing skills so you can improve them and become a well balanced angler.  Let’s discuss the strategy for fly fishing that will always yield success.

There you have it.  That’s the three ingredients you need to catch fish.  It’s actually very straightforward and simple on the surface, but the learnings and improvements come when you dive in deeper.  I’m shocked at how many people fail to correctly execute this on the river and I think it’s because people aren’t always thinking about these variables while on the river.  Often, you’ll have people polarized on one side or the other about these variables stating you only need really good presentation to catch fish or if you don’t have the absolute perfect fly, you’ll never catch that trout.  Balance is an important and repeating trend in fly fishing and is the key to this strategy.

You can’t have the right fly and a great cast, but fishing in water that doesn’t hold fish.  You can’t be in trout infested waters during a caddis hatch throwing a size #2 flying ant in chartreuse and expect to catch any fish, even with a drag free drift.  You can’t be in the middle of a midge hatch with rising trout all around and be skating your midge due to unintentional drag on your fly line.  All of the above scenarios will yield you very few to no trout.  However, if you’re in the right spot, during a caddis hatch and able to throw a semi-decent elk hair caddis out with a fairly drag-free drift, you’re much more likely to have a good numbers day.  A balance of all three are needed.  In addition, there are times where location is more important than fly selection or presentation, and conversely, the same is true for fly selection and presentation.  Tailwaters that get pressured often are a great example of a good location (meaning full of trout) but it often requires excellent presentation and fly selection for success.

I could give dozens of more examples but I think you get the point.  The goal of any day should be finding the right balance of these three variables in order to catch the most fish.  Before we talk you through some more examples to help show how this works on the water, I want to dive into each of these variables a little closer and peel back the onion.  You’ll see that though there are just three variables to successful fly fishing, there are dozens of ingredients that make up those variables and within those variables is the secret sauce to success.

Follow These Steps
Follow through these steps with me and then we’ll give some examples at the end to connect it together well. We’re about to open pandoras box of fly fishing and it’s remarkable how complicated it actually is. With that said, we’ve broken it down into these steps. I believe you should take these steps in the order the are presented below. Plan ahead considering all of these variables, but make decisions in the order they are presented below.

STEP 1 – FINDING THE RIGHT LOCATION FROM MAP TO CAST
When we talk about fly fishing locations, we’re first and foremost discussing places where the fish you’re targeting are plentiful. However, there are dozens upon dozens of variables that make up what makes a good location for catching fish. For purposes of this article we’re going to focus on trout in rivers. While these examples and areas will make the most sense for trout rivers, they can be adjusted for any fish and body of water you fish. Here are the main areas that should be considered when finding a good location:

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Environmental factors cover two areas. First, it covers habitat for the targeted species, in this case, trout. You need the right water temperatures, streamflows, insect life, stream structure and a host of other options that make good trout water. We will discuss these in further detail in later posts, but pick 4 or 5 areas you fish often and look at them on a map and look at pictures you’ve taken of the landscape. There are many factors going on there and finding those in other rivers in your area are often what will find you new and productive trout waters.

STREAMFLOWS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE
I want to take a moment here and touch on the subject of streamflows. This can be incredibly important. The USGS and local state departments for wildlife and resource management all track major rivers at several points along their journey to help aid in water management and other reasons. For us as anglers, we can make use of this data as well and track where stream flows are at. While the numbers and the story they tell is different for every river, it’s important to look for three things when researching stream flows.
First, what are the flows at in comparison to historical highs and lows? Knowing if flows are high or low for a time of year or any given day helps you see if you should expect anything different from previous years. This data can be found on their sites if you do a historical search.

The second is whether the flow is going up or coming down. It has to be coming up or going down at anytime, but how much it has gone up or come down can make a difference in what you fish and when you fish. An example would be when flows have been stable in mid spring and they jump up due to rain or snowmelt in a matter of days. This can trigger annelid, cranefly and other insects to be more plentiful in the flows as they commonly get dislodged as the the force of the water increases with streamflow bumps. Things like this can make huge differences on your success for the day. Check if flows are going up and down and learn what that means for the rivers you fish and you’ll be better off in preparing for your day.

Lastly, is the fishable flows range. This of course varies per river, but all rivers have an optimal flow. Set the ranges for your river by looking at historical highs and lows for the last few years against the data you have on how it fished at those times. Typically you can do this based off runoff as well. Looking at a river that commonly sits between 200 – 400 cfs but hits 1600 cfs in run off and has flows later in the year (November or so) of only 100 cfs tells me that you can likely fish the river well between 150 cfs and 800 cfs. You can split runoff in half and add 50% to the bottom flow to get a fishable range, then in the middle of that range (325 cfs) is your optimal flow and anything up or down from there 100-200cfs is probably good flows. It’s a little arbitrary but after fishing the river a few times at different flows and looking at the stream structure you’ll have a good idea of when things should fish well and when they wouldn’t. I could, and likely will, write a more complete article on understanding streamflows for fly fishing in more detail, but for now understand they are very important to the environmental location factors of making your best fly fishing day.

The second environmental factor is weather. Day temps, night temps, daily avg temps, wind, cloud cover, rain, snow, barometric pressure, moon phases, and more all attribute to the weather. It is also broken down seasonally. A winter snow storm, for example with temps in the high 30’s can produce excellent fishing right in the thick of the storm due to low pressure, relatively warm temps (for winter) and the fact that midges hatch in anything it seems and make for good trout food. However, if you get a snow storm in summer when it’s supposed to be 80’s and it’s 30’s that almost certainly will shut the fishing down until things stabilize. So it’s not completely straightforward, but when you break it down per season, there are trends to look for and consider and with careful observation and note taking you can find the right weather trends for each season that are optimal in your area.

Environmental factors are very important to fly fishing success, but are something that as anglers, we have the least amount of control. It’s important to know as much as you can so you can plan for success. I’ve had days where weather has completely ruined and made the days, regardless of fly selection and presentation. Take your time to learn, track and measure these factors and you can find some excellent places to fish and learn the right times to fish them making your days exponentially more successful.

RIVER FACTORS
In addition to the environment, where to fish on the river is very important as well. In our efforts i building the River Explorer, we built an acronym to help us understand how rivers are broken down. BRSB is the acronym and it stands for Basin, River, Section, Beat. A basin is the a single and complete drainage from one major river system to another. In Colorado, the South Platte River Basin is comprised primarily of the South Platte River as the primary drainage, but has dozens of other rivers (bear creek, boulder creek, clear creek, etc) that all drain into the south platte creating the basin.
それは「BRSB」で、Basin(流域), River(河川), Section(区間), Beat(拍子)を意味する。 コロラド州のthe South Platte River 流域は主流域として 主にthe South Platte川からなっているが、bear creek, boulder creek, clear creekなど沢山の川を含み、それらはすべて流域を形成するthe south platteに集水している。

The river of course is how most of us talk about where we fished. That is simply the name of the river. Moving on.

The section is where it gets tricky as we try to communicate together as anglers. Some of the more famous rivers have sections that are well understood, while others such as cross creek only really have an upper, middle and lower section. Sections are defined as noticeably different fishing or environmental changes that happen in a river. A river may start out small in the upper section containing small pocket water, but picks up bigger streamflows and widens into a medium size river and more traditional runs, riffles and holes. A reservoir may dam up the river creating a tailwater and thus, a new section. Or it could even be things like what we see on the Bighorn river in MT, where A-3 section is the first section standing for Afterbay boat ramp to 3-mile boat ramp where anglers commonly float a “section” of river. This changes based on the state, size of water and environment.

The beat is just another breakdown within a section of river as some sections are rather large. A beat refers to a minimum a single series of a run, riffle and hole. This is the minimum, but the range can expand as necessary for the river size and way the sections are defined. For example, here in Colorado we have the South Platte River Basin -> South Platte River -> Dream Stream (Charlie Meyers SWA) Section -> Upper, Middle and Lower Beats that are defined by the parking lots. Many beats are developed in this fashion.

With all that said and defined, it is important to have a way to track and segment rivers because they will fish differently on any given day. Some areas have strong hatches during certain seasons while others seem to produce best in early or late seasons. The best way to discover this is by experience and talking with others about their experience. Once you have some knowledge or experience on certain sections at certain times of years, you can use that in conjunction with weather data and have a pretty good idea what section and even beat you should fish for your upcoming trip. I can’t emphasize this research enough, it really helps your fishing chances when you can find a spot that has produced well in the past during certain conditions vs a random spot that you pick for whatever reason.

WATER FACTORS
Ok if you’ve followed the steps so far, the key now is to know where to fish on the beat. You’ve chosen a river and section that should fish well given the weather and streamflow conditions and now you are ready to throw in a line. This is equivalent to the old golf saying, you drive for show and putt for dough. The ability to read water and make a cast to a fish is paramount to success. You can be in the right area with the right weather, but if you can’t find the fish from there, you’re going to miss out. While we won’t get into the hows and whats of reading water in this post, we simply are going to state it’s importance. Spend time learning where fish hold and why they hold there and in combination with the above location factors, you can be relatively certain that you are now throwing a fly near a fish. This is good and all you need now is the right fly and presentation which we’ll cover next.

Fly selection, in it’s simplest definition is the ability to choose the right fly on any given occasion.  How do you do that?  Well, we’ll break it down a bit for you here and you can read that (it’s free) to get in-depth detail.

KNOW YOUR BUGS
The first step is to know your bugs.  If you don’t know the 13 major categories of insects that trout eat off the top of your head, you will struggle at some point to choose the right fly.  Midges, Mayflies, Caddis, Stoneflies, Scuds, Sowbugs, Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, Annelids, Damselflies, Dragonflies and Water Boatman.  Memorize those including their common sizes and colors if you can.  This will help immensely when you’re on the water and after tying on your last 5 confidence flies, you still aren’t getting them to eat even though you can see them right there in front of you.  They are eating something but you aren’t able to figure it out.  If you know your bugs, you can systematically go through them and find what works.  The better you get at knowing your bugs and learning the other skills we teach in our fly fishing entomology course, the faster you’ll be at choosing the right fly.  Most people can get there in a day, but someone who knows their bugs will figure it out faster and have more time to catch more fish.

In addition to knowing the bugs, sizes and colors also know their stages and when they hatch per season.  For example, during winter there is no need for hoppers, beetles or ants cause they are all terrestrials and are hibernating/dead until next summer when it warms up.  Fairly obvious one of course, but can you answer what the primary months and hatches are for spring mayflies?  That may be more difficult if you don’t know your bugs and their seasonality.  You can often pick 3-5 insects/stages combos for any given season and fish those exclusively and get away with it.  Knowing the seasonality really helps you narrow down the list.  Fly selection, after all is really just a skill in learning how to choose the right fly the fastest through process of elimination.
If you have a good handle on your bugs, then you can take the next step.

PLAN YOUR FLY BOXES
All the bug knowledge in the world won’t help if you forget the right bugs once you get on the water.  Use the bug knowledge to plan out your fly boxes by season or by river or by section or however it makes sense to do so.  Check out our free guide on composing your fly box here and you’ll get a good handle on the many ways you can organize your box.  Find what is right for where and how you fish and stock up your box accordingly.
Knowing your bugs puts the right patterns in the right boxes and sets you up for success on the river which is the last and final step in fly selection.

MATCHING THE DINNER PLATE
Trout are almost always willing to eat.  Sometimes they are opportunistic, other times selective to certain foods. It’s your job once on the river to observe the environment, what’s hatching or active under the water and tie that in with how and where trout are feeding in the water to make the best guess on what they are eating.  Usually with the right bug knowledge, and proper flies chosen for your box, it only takes 1-5 tries to get the right fly that they are eating.  Without the previous knowledge, it can be 10-15 or more and that can take an extra 1-3 hours to figure out cutting in deep to your fishing time.  When I say match the dinner plate, I mean match what trout are eating, not just what’s flying around.

People see a caddis and immediately throw one on despite the fact trout are sipping some kind of emerger in slow tailout pools (sounding a lot like a mayfly hatch to me).  So don’t just tie on what you see, try to figure out what the trout are eating based on their behavior and what we know about insect behavior.
To summarize, if you know your bugs, plan your boxes well and can use that knowledge to figure out what fish are eating, then you should be well on your way to choosing the right fly.  At this point in the strategic steps, you’ve found active trout and have the right fly figured out, now it’s time to bring it home.

This is where it all comes together.  I believe this is also why so many “presentation-junkies” think this is all that matters.  I think a lot of times, we can go with people to a place that holds trout and fish flies that others do and then with good presentation get there with more fish.  With all the information readily available these days on the internet to anglers, nearly all of it is around location and fly selection.  Sure there are presentation tips on casting and double hauls and aerial mends which all help a lot, but the only way to get better with presentation is practice.  The knowledge needs application and the amount of time needed to become excellent at presenting flies is longer than it takes to find good locations or the right flies.  With all that said, it’s an important factor regardless of your opinions or pre-dispositions.  Let’s break down the steps to a successful presentation in the steps you should think about.

THE RIGHT SET-UP | RIGGING RIGHT
If you don’t have enough weight, or aren’t deep enough, or have too heavy of tippet on or a host of other set up related issues, you’re going to struggle to get the right presentation.  You can’t ice skate with out skates and the same is true for fly fishing, but the ice skates are the right rigging configuration for dry fly, streamer or nymph fishing.  This changes for every day, location and setting, so you have to learn a lot of different set ups and their pros and cons in order to catch more fish more often.  Take the time to learn different ways to rig up different presentations and keep them in your arsenal to be used at the right times with the right flies.

THE CAST | GETTING THERE
The fish are rising in the back right pocket of that pool with multiple currents in between you and the fish.  How do you get a good drift there? Well you can either cross the river or you can make a cast with appropriate slack to get the drift long enough to induce a strike.  There are many times where the right casts will make the difference in the fish eating the fly or not.  Focus on getting a good cast, that is accurate and sets you up for a good drift.  Casting takes practice and changes based on whether your nymphing, using a dry dropper, straight dry fly fishing or streamer fishing as well as your surroundings.  Highly dynamic, but with practice (which is fun!) you’ll get better and better knowing when to make the right casts in the right spots.

THE DRIFT | DON’T SCREW THIS UP
You can make a bad cast and even have a semi-accurate fly pattern and yet a good drift will land you more fish.  It’s the moment of truth and matters the most.  What makes a good drift?  Well the short-sighted answer is a fly presented most naturally, but the truth is actually much more complicated and makes my point on why this is the most important fly fishing article you’ll ever read.  What makes a good drift is being in the right river on the right day with the right weather with the right streamflows with the right preparation and observation to choose the right fly from your well planned fly box with the right fly set up on your correctly chosen rod and line for the area with the most naturally presented fly possible over the trout.   Read that twice if you need to (Forgive me grammar nerds I’m sure it’s not a great sentence, but I’m here to teach not worry over grammar.)  All of your hard work, planning, observation, practice and patience come together on the drift.  If you screwed up too many of the variables and pieces of the puzzle before, the drift won’t work.  Then you’ll be that guy who has been casting to the same spot for the last hour, hoping the trout will change his mind and eat your fly instead.  This is a key point in the understanding of the strategy behind an angler who consistently catches more fish vs anglers who get lucky on occasion with good fishing days but often struggles more than not.   The more you get right on all the previous steps, the easier and more successful your drift will be.

If you’ve done a good enough job (which changes every time you’re on the water) on the previous steps, then you just need a natural drift which often means a drag-free drift where the fly moves naturally with the pace of the river flow.  A good mend and proper line management sets up a nice drift and prepares you for the all important hookset and landing where fish are put to your net and you can claim success on a long journey of decisions and variables that you successfully navigated to fool a trout, which by the way has a pea-sized brain.  I laugh a bit as I write this because for all of us as anglers, this probably gets you all excited to get out and fish, but you read this to someone who doesn’t fly fish and all they see is a ton of money, work and effort to catch a dumb little trout.  It’s remarkable how many things have to come together for a successful catch of a trout.  Helps us remember how fortunate we are to catch them in the first place and how the journey is perpetually rewarding.

So in summary on the presentation side, it takes the right set up, the right cast and the right drift to put a fish to net.  It’s simple if you state it that way, but the last 3500 words discuss here really help break down the details of how to systematically take a strategic approach that works in catching fish.  Now it’s time to bring it all together and help you understand with some examples.

Using this framework will help you immensely on the river because when things don’t go right, you won’t just keep trying harder, but instead, take a step back and ask yourself which variables you are missing.  This makes a huge difference in your fly fishing success.  Sometimes it’s as simple as putting on another split shot, other times, you may realize you need to move up river or try a new river all together.  The point is that when you struggle on the river, it’s often for a reason, and to start catching more, you need to adapt and switch it up.  If you can be adjusting and honing in the strategy for the day, you’ll catch more fish.  Let’s go over a couple examples that will help bring it together.

Example 1 – Waiting on the Weather
I was fishing the Crystal River up in the Roaring fork valley in 2017 in early spring.  I was out doing research for my membership, the river explorer and was in the upper section of the crystal river working my way downstream.  I knew the crystal held fish and the season was right for the water to be productive for fishing.  The flows were in great shape and I had a series of stoneflies, baetis and midges that should be active in the river.  In short, I had everything well planned out considering streamflows, section of river to fish, likely holding water, fly selection and a good nymphing rig set up that seems to always work well for freestones.  The weather reports had a chance of snow and rain, but it was spotty at best and for early spring in the Rockies, every day has a chance of…well everything.  So with best laid plans I came down from the pass near Marble and made my way to the river.  It was sunny and gorgeous and I had spotted some BWO on the water and fish were rising.  Just like I planned I was ready to tie on some dries and get to fishing.  However, by the time I got rigged up and cracked open a beer, the wind started gusting at 30mph, snow came pouring in over the mountains and I was in the middle of a spring blizzard.  Within 5 minutes, the BWO’s were gone and so were the rising fish.  Instead of waiting it out, I switched up to a nymph rig and began working the water where I noticed fish were rising.  30 minutes of fishing and not a single hook up.  The weather had shut things down.  So with that, I decided to hop back in the car and move downstream a little as the storm was isolated.  15 minutes later and ¼ mile downstream, the sun came back out and began to melt what had just came down.  The wind slowed and the warm sun started to heat the water.  I decided to stick to my nymph rig (baetis nymphs and SJW combo) and was able to catch half a dozen fish in about 15 minutes.

Making a few adjustments in this story not only kept me warmer, but put me on more fish.  Let’s discuss those changes in more detail now.  Firstly, I adjusted to the weather and the change in fish activity by switching to a nymph.  While this wasn’t enough at the first spot which clearly held fish but not ones that wanted to eat anymore, the next spot proved nymphing to be the most productive option.  If I had just stuck it out in that one hole, even when the sun came back out, it wouldn’t be likely that fish would start rising again. It’s possible, but they weren’t eating my nymphs and waiting around would have just left me in the storm, but I was able to change location and find sunny, more productive water.  When in doubt keep moving, it really pays off.  The second change was switching to a nymph set up.  While the fish did come back up to dries 4 hours later even further downstream (of which I fished and caught a couple)  to wait those 4 hours hoping for a hatch to come off would have been a poor way to maximize my day. Instead I was able to wait for the hatch while nymphing and catch 15 more fish before they started rising again. Even then I’ll bet I could have kept catching them on nymphs, but dries were more fun since I had already had success on the nymphs.  As I hope this story illustrates, it doesn’t take a lot of major changes, but instead a few minor ones as you adjust to the environment and the feedback you get from the fish.  Paying attention like this, applying the knowledge you have, and always focusing on maximizing your opportunities will put more fish to net day in and day out.

Example 2 – High Water Annelids
One day fishing last year up in South Park on the south platte river, I was struggling to put fish to net.  The weather was good, it was late spring right before run off and they had just recently had some good rains.  I came prepared with several mayfly nymph patterns such as a Frenchie and mercury baetis, and a few stonefly nymphs as well that I knew worked well up there as I fish up here often.  My experience and knowledge helped me pick a good set of flies to start nymphing with and I started working the runs and holes knowing this time of year these would be the best sections of water to fish.  An hour went by with very little luck.  I had caught about 2 or 3, but because I knew the area, I knew there are enough fish in here to be catching 9 or 10 by this point.  I knew I was missing something.  I sat down and took a minute to think and all of a sudden it dawned on me as I looked at the banks.  The water was a little off color and the water was substantially higher than normal.  I had forgotten to check the flows or even pay attention when I was on the river, but after some mediocre success I was determined to dial it in.  Higher flows from rain in spring time can often mean cranefly and annelid (worm) being a major food source in the water.  Sure enough, I stuck my bug seine down in the water and pulled up several red and pink/flesh colored annelids.  Well, it took no more than 3 casts after switching to a double squirmy worm rig to catch a fish.  It was lights out the rest of the day.  Sure the fish were eating other bugs, but they were on the annelids hard.  With over 40 fish to the net by days end, it was one of the more memorable days I’ve had up there.
川岸を眺めていたとき、不意に(all of a sudden)、分かった。

So this one is pretty obvious what I did wrong.  Poor planning and not checking flows or past weather patterns before would have put me on the “worm hatch” much sooner or at least kept the idea in my head to try.  The right thing I did here was to step back and consider if I could be doing better than just a couple fish per hour and see if there was something I could improve.  Sure enough, the increased streamflows led me down a path that the bug seine from the entomology course helped solidify and the rest is history.  One of my best fishing days of the year last year and all thanks to keeping the right framework in place and strategy while on the river.  Another quick note that helped me even more was adjusting my nymphing set up.  While a strike indicator was working, I was able to catch even more by ditching the indicator and thus reducing the drag of the increased flows getting my flies down deeper, faster and longer in the strike zone.  A change in presentation once you have location and fly selection figured out can make it seem like you’re almost cheating….almost.

Commit to Becoming a Better Angler
I don’t want to understate the many additional reasons we fly fish.  From the nourishment it provides our souls in rest, views and solitude, to the friendships that develop through countless fish stories and memories, and to the satisfaction it yields when you outsmart the fish with your well-presented and strategically thought out fly selection, cast and hook set.  All of these reasons are incredibly important and add to the awesomeness that is experienced on the river.  With that said, we all know we want to catch more fish more often and by keeping a strategic mindset, using the location + fly selection + presentation framework and continually making adjustments until we get the desired result, we can really maximize the enjoyment we get from fly fishing.  Challenge yourself and commit to becoming a better angler and use the tips found here to really maximize the success.  We hope you enjoyed this very detailed article and hope it sets you on a course to become a better angler.

How to Prevent Trout From Seeing You

How to Prevent Trout From Seeing You

By: Devin Olsen

Fly Fishing Trout Vision

Though it may not look like good holding water, the area Antonio Rodrigues is fishing produced several fish in midwinter. By kneeling, he kept his profile low and his head and shoulders below the cone of vision of the trout he was targeting. If you can get past the extra effort and the odd looks from fellow anglers, kneeling will produce extra opportunities to catch unsuspecting trout when the water is clear and the fish are spooky.

How do you avoid alerting fish to your presence? Here are five strategies I use to help prevent fish from seeing me and perceiving me as a threat.

Fish a Longer Rod

One way to avoid showing yourself to fish in clear water is to fish from a greater distance. A lot of the nymph fishing I do is based on Euro-nymphing methods. These techniques are inherently limited in their effective range. Many anglers start off Euro-nymphing with a 10-foot rod. However, one of the ways to increase your range is to fish a longer rod. My friend and former Fly Fishing Team USA mate Charlie Card spends much of his time fishing on his home water, Utah’s Green River. This is a techy tailwater river often referred to as “The Aquarium” because its clarity is unsurpassed, and trout can be spotted everywhere, including at the bottom of pools more than 20 feet deep. A while back, I asked Charlie what strategies he uses to adapt to fishing the Green when Euro-nymphing. One of his simplest is that he only Euro-nymphs with rods 11 feet and longer at this river. With the longer rod, he is able to increase his successful radius of presentation; sometimes only a foot or two extra is needed to make the difference between spooking a fish and catching it.

When Euro-nymphing, your rod loosely forms the hypotenuse of adjacent right triangles. With a little trigonometry it’s possible to calculate the difference in reach between rods of different lengths. In short, an extra foot of rod leads to more than an extra foot of reach. When fishing large rivers or clear pressured rivers with spooky fish, a longer rod can mean the difference between catching fish and coming up short.

Use a Fishing Method Tailored to Distance Presentations

The other strategy for fishing farther away is choosing the proper technique and rig for the situation. In clear water, the distances required to avoid spooking fish can be significant if the water is smooth and the view between air and water is not obstructed by broken surface currents. In these situations, I often choose to forgo Euro-nymphing in favor of a longer-distance strategy.

Let me provide an example. In the 2013 World Fly Fishing Championship in Norway, we fished the large, low-gradient Vefsna River. The weather turned warm and dry for several weeks leading up to the championship, and the river dropped and became very clear. The densities of fish were low in the river, and most sessions were won with less than 10 fish. When I arrived at the river during the championship, I found that 90 percent of my beat was a smooth, medium-velocity glide between 2 and 5 feet deep. While I could not spot fish, I could see the bottom easily, and knew the fish would see me.

Most of the competitors from other countries chose to fish wet flies swung on floating and clear intermediate lines, which worked well. However, I chose to rely on my suspension/strike-indicator nymphing background, and rigged a rod with a dry and tungsten nymph dropper to use the same approach, while staying within the FIPS-Mouche rules, which don’t allow floating devices on the leader other than flies. The dry fly was a large Chubby Chernobyl with extra yarn I added in the wing to increase the buoyancy and hold up heavy nymphs. I spent 90 percent of my session fishing this rig with a combination of dead drifts and twitches to move the dry fly. The grayling and brown trout fell hard for the duo, and I landed 16 fish for the session win, which was the highest number landed during any session of the championship. If I had stuck with the usual short-range Euro-nymphing approach, it’s possible I would have landed a few fish, but I doubt I would have been nearly as successful.

Use Naturally Occurring Obstructions to Shield You from the Fish

An often-overlooked way to minimize your chances of spooking fish is to use obstructions to block a trout’s view of your body or to blend into your surroundings. One of my favorite examples of this strategy comes from Gary Lafontaine. In his book Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes, Gary shared a story about how he caught a wise old brown trout from a friend’s pond. In his first few encounters, Gary noticed that the fish would cruise its established path until swerving out into the pond after noticing Gary fishing from the bank. Gary placed an artificial tree on the bank near where the fish had established its territory and allowed the brown trout to become accustomed to it. On a subsequent trip, he used the tree to hide behind. As a result, he avoided signaling himself as a threat and easily caught the trout.

Anglers in New Zealand are known for wearing camouflage to hide their presence when stalking trout. Whether you sport full camo or not, avoid wearing bright colors, especially on your head and neck, and you will be able to approach more trout without spooking them. (PHOTO BY CONNOR MURPHY)

This story illustrates a strategy that few anglers use on the river. The fact is, there can be lots of types of obstructions to use while you’re on the river. The obvious ones are physical objects like rocks and trees. When placed between yourself and the fish, these objects can break up your outline just like the artificial tree did for Gary Lafontaine. If I’m fishing pocketwater, I will kneel on, lean on, or crouch behind available boulders that will help to break my silhouette and allow me to get closer to my target lie, or fish. I also look for dead trees hanging out over the river that I can use the same way.

The current itself is often the best and easiest veil to hide behind. When the surface of the river is broken enough to hide the riverbed, I place this current in between myself and my target lie, just like it was a tree or rock. If you force the fish to look through broken current, either they won’t be able to see you, or their view will be broken enough that they won’t consider you a threat. A common example of this strategy is fishing from a wading position in the river to the lies on the far bank. When there are waves and broken water running between you and your target lie, they will hide your outline and allow you to cut the distance between you and the trout you’re after. When you can fish closer to your target, you can reduce the slack in your presentation, improve your strike detection and deadness of your drift, and quicken your hook-set reaction time.

If you can’t find turbulent water or a physical object to put in between yourself and the fish, another strategy to try is blending into your surroundings. If you have ever seen photos of anglers from New Zealand, or have taken a trip there, you will likely notice a lot of anglers wearing camouflage. While this may seem overzealous to some, they deal with the difficulties of spooky trout in clear water on a daily basis, and use any strategy they can to reduce the trout’s perception of them as a threat. You may not need to dress fully like an archery hunter to avoid spooking fish on your local river, but I’m convinced it can pay dividends to dress in drab colors that don’t stand out drastically from the vegetation in the riparian zone. This is particularly important when it comes to hats or shirts, since the parts of your body fish are most likely to see first are your head, shoulders, neck, and outstretched arms.

Lower Your Elevation and Profile

Keep repeating the mantra, “If I can see the bottom or the fish, they can see me.” As you wade into position to fish a lie, think about your position and your height. If where you plan to wade puts your head high above the water, fish are more likely to see you. If you can wade into a depression between rocks or step off a gravel bar or shelf into deeper water, you will diminish your presence to the fish.

Keeping your shadow off the water you plan to fish is critical to avoid alerting trout to your presence. In this photo, Lance Egan gets into fishing position by crouching. The low afternoon sun angle on this December day cast long shadows; by keeping his shadow off the water, Lance avoided spooking the fish he was about to catch.

This is a common problem when fishing from an inside bend. These locations are deposition zones for the river, and flooding flows often deposit gravel or cobble that forms a steep slope. A single step toward the center of the river may lower your profile 6 to 12 inches in these types of locations. Even though stepping into the river will put you closer to your intended lie, the reduced height may decrease the angle between you and the water’s surface sufficiently for you to get under the cone of vision of the trout you are pursuing. Be cognizant of your casts as well. Many of the best dry-fly anglers I know make sidearm casts to keep their line close to the water and out of view of the trout.

In addition, a lot of anglers overlook the position of their shadow as they approach the river. There is no better way to send trout scurrying for cover quickly than a shadow cast across their holding lie. If you have ever watched trout holding in a pool as a bird of prey flies over and casts a shadow on the water, you have likely seen the instant panic that ensues. As you approach the water, pay close attention to where your shadow extends, especially when the sun is at low angles during the day and your shadow is longer. Crouch to get into position if necessary and you will find more fish still willing to eat when you make your first cast.

If the water is less than knee-deep or if I’m fishing from the bank, I will often fish from my knees. During the session on the Pliva River in Bosnia I described earlier, the only way I could approach the fish I spotted was from dry land on the bank they were holding by. Heavy water in the middle of the channel prevented an across-theriver approach. I spent two and a half of my three hours in that session fishing from my knees on the bank. I firmly believe I would not have caught any fish had I been standing over them.

The location of its eyes allows a trout to see much of the world around it in binocular or monocular vision. However, there is one blind spot behind its head where you can approach it and stay out of sight.

A similar strategy paid dividends during the 2011 National Fly Fishing Championship in North Carolina. I drew a beat on the Nantahala River in my final session that had produced poor results for other anglers in the previous four sessions. When I scouted the beat, there was a long section (80–100 yards) of shallow pocketwater at the bottom, which was difficult to approach in the low, clear flows. However, the temperatures were prime, and I thought there would be fish that hadn’t been bothered by other competitors in this less-prime-looking water.

I spent the first two hours of my session on my knees slithering from rock to rock. Trout came easily in the turbulent yet shallow water. They were much harder to fool in the obvious pools and deep pockets above, which earlier competitors had likely targeted heavily. Though I did not win the session, I was able to get a third place on a tough beat, which was good enough to secure a silver individual medal for the championship. If I had taken the road heavily traveled in the deep pools and obvious pockets, my finish would have been much worse. Instead, a low-profile approach, to water that was prime for the river conditions, produced results.

Approach Fish from Downstream to Avoid Being Seen

The anatomical position of a trout’s eyes allows it a cone of monocular vision on the sides and binocular vision in the front, but it has a blind spot directly downstream. If you stay in that blind spot, the trout won’t be able to see you until your proximity becomes too close.

My teammate Pat Weiss is a master of fishing upstream to trout. Reading back through my journals of the competitions we’ve fished together over the past few years, my comments from our practice sessions repeatedly refer to how well Pat fishes from a downstream position. It’s become clear to me that there are many instances where I could incorporate this strategy more regularly into my own approach. Like George Daniel, Pat hails from State College, Pennsylvania, the capital of tuck casting and the upstream tight-line nymphing techniques made famous by Joe Humphreys and George Harvey. This region features a lot of lower-gradient trout rivers with flatter sections that make it difficult to avoid spooking fish when employing an across-the-river approach, except in higher flows.

Pat has adjusted his style to master lower-gradient rivers. He uses a Euro-nymphing leader specifically built with a thicker sighter so that it will float and suspend lightly weighted nymphs for an extended upstream drift. He prefers a fast 10-foot, 4-weight rod to assist in his complete command of the tuck cast, as opposed to the softer rods typically used by most Euro-nymphing anglers.

EURO-NYMPHING FOR STEELHEAD PART 1:
EQUIPMENT AND RIGS

Now that I've moved to the northwest, I have the pleasure of fishing for steelhead during six months of the year. In this first steelhead post, I will take you through the equipment and methods I use, at least while nymphing. In future posts I will share my four most reliable steelhead nymphs, the basic approach and angle I take for each potential holding lie, and tips on steelhead biology and behavior that can help you plan the timing of a trip as well as the water you target.

This last fall I started spey fishing, which I have really enjoyed, but when the water temperatures drop and steelhead are less willing to move to the fly, the reliable way to target them is with nymphs. Even when swinging conditions are ideal, it is likely you will still catch more steelhead with nymphs than on the swing. However, having experienced it myself quite a few times this season, there is definitely something special about the spey cast and the tight line grab of a steelhead. I already look forward to future seasons of temporarily infiltrating the Fellowship of the Swing. However, I suppose I'm still childishly impatient because I’m not the kind of angler who is willing to spend hours or days fishing a method I know is not likely to produce when I know another will.

As with resident trout, European nymphing has been the most reliable and versatile way to target steelhead for me. Switching over from one nymphing method to another for steelhead can be difficult because the opportunities to receive positive reinforcement from your quarry, on technique and choice of flies, are far fewer than on a typical trout stream. Therefore, if Euro-nymphing is foreign to you, it is probably easier to build up confidence Euro-nymphing for trout than it is for steelhead. When I started fishing for steelhead back in 2009, I already had great faith in the effectiveness of Euro-nymphing for trout after a couple of seasons of irrefutable results. So when I joined my friend Scott Berrett on our first trip to the Salmon River in Idaho, it was an easy choice for me to start and stick with Euro-nymphing, and it didn’t take long to experience my first steelhead coming to the net. In the ensuing years I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of great steelhead trips and I feel like I’m starting to become familiar with their habits and the most consistent ways to target them. While I’ve written a short 3 part series on Euro nymphing previously (Euro-nymphing 101 parts 1, 2, and 3) and the tactics and the explanations in those posts are essentially transferable, the pursuit of steelhead requires a few adjustments to be consistently successful. Below is some advice on fishing for steelhead.
Most of it applies directly to Euro-nymphing but much of it is applicable to steelhead fishing in general. Almost all of my experience has been with inland summer-run steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) except for a few steelhead I caught while in California. Therefore, it may not fully apply to coastal winter run steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus). However, in talking with other anglers, winter run steelhead are also susceptible to nymphs, so I assume my advice will be applicable to them as well.

Steelhead Equipment(スティールヘッド用仕掛け)

Rods: Thankfully, longer rods are being built lighter and better these days and more manufacturers and anglers are realizing their benefits. It wasn’t long ago that a well-balanced 6 to 8 weight rod was difficult to find in a length greater than 9 feet. Longer rods will help reach across currents, achieve greater distance from the angler to the fish, and provide more ability to mend at distance if you’re chucking a strike indicator rig. These days, I do all of my steelhead nymphing with 10’ 7 or 8 weight rods. If you are mainly fishing a trout river that gets the odd steelhead, it is possible to land steelhead on lighter tackle, especially in cold water when they are lethargic. I landed a half dozen this winter on a 10’ 6” 3 weight Cortland Competition Nymph Rod and 5x tippet while trying to target trout. They were a nice surprise. However, targeting steelhead with overly light tackle is not advisable, both for the health of a steelhead if you plan to release it (please consider keeping hatchery steelhead for genetic reasons) and for your own hooked to landed ratio.

Reels: Most reels nowadays have drags that are sufficient to stop a steelhead smoothly so that isn’t the most important concern when choosing a reel. To me, finding a reel with the correct balance is the most important facet because longer rods can cause forearm fatigue if they are unbalanced. If the reel is too heavy, your outfit will wear out your shoulder high sticking with it all day long. If it is too light, the rod will feel tip heavy and your forearm will have to work overly hard to stop the rod at the end of a cast and to be able to hold the rod high and steady through the drift. This may sound silly to some of you but I have a unique connection with this problem. I previously spent three years on and off in physical therapy to treat tendonitis caused by earlier heavier rods, which were not balanced well. As a result, there were several years in competitions where a prescription level of ibuprofen was my performance enhancing drug. Therefore, my recommendation is not to brush aside rod and reel balance, especially with rods 5 weight and higher that are 9' 6" or longer.

Leaders, rigs, and fly line: I fish a Tactical Fly Fisher thinnest or thinner leader while Euro-nymphing for steelhead. The smaller diameter butt sections on these two models help me achieve less sag when fishing the increased distances and water depths that often accompany nymphing for steelhead. However, the heavier flies I usually fish make casting very difficult if you are unused to the lack of turnover power that a long Euro-nymph leader exhibits. The heavier flies are also able to counteract some of the horizontal sag and force which gravity tries to induce on your leader, and thereby your drift, when fishing a Euro-nymph rig a ways beyond your rod tip (15+ feet). Therefore, if you are a Euro-nymphing novice, I highly recommend trying a slightly stouter leader configuration like my Tactical Fly Fisher thin leader, with a 20 lb test Maxima Chameleon butt section. It’s still light enough you can achieve dead drifts at a decent distance but the stiffer butt section will make casting a heavy 2-3 fly rig easier.

A Euro-nymphing leader recipe for steelhead. The butt section varies between 20, 15, and 12 pound test on my thin, thinner, and thinnest models. The dropper tags are simply "waste ends" of the triple surgeon's knots which originate from the leader connected to your rod, not the tippet you are adding.

I always pair my Euro-nymphing rigs with a Cortland level 0.022” Competition Nymph Line. I tie the leaders I sell on the site long enough that you can try to fish a typical fly line and not have it leave the reel very often in order to eliminate the drift and strike detection killing sag that heavy fly line induces in between your guides or beyond your rod tip. However, the tactile grip advantage of having a fly line reduces the possibility of line slipping between your fingers on the hook set, or while playing a fish, and makes stripping in slack much easier. Because steelhead have hard mouths (it’s in their name after all), it can take a significant hook set to penetrate the hook deeply enough to attain a secure hold in their mouth. Using a thin fly line, which you can grip better than a monofilament leader, greatly improves that effort.

Steelhead obviously require stouter tippet than your average trout. I generally fish 2x tippet, though if the water is clear and I mainly expect smaller one-salt steelhead, I will drop to 3x for a better sink rate and drift. Because steelhead often hold in fairly deep water and thicker steelhead tippet (2x-3x) sinks much slower than what I normally use for trout (5x-6x), I tend to fish a longer distance between my sighter and first fly for steelhead (5-7 feet) than I would for trout (3-5 feet). As always, this distance should be adjusted based on the depths and velocities of the river you are fishing. It can be adjusted by adding tippet at the tippet ring and then blood knotting to the terminal tippet you already have connected to your flies. If you need to fish shallower water again after adding tippet, simply cut off the tippet at the blood knot junction, remove the added tippet at the tippet ring, and reattach your terminal tippet (the tippet connected to your flies) to your tippet ring. This will reattach your original tippet length, minus the waste incurred while tying the knot. During the fall and winter, when the water is low on my local rivers, I usually fish two flies in all but the deepest pools. When the water rises in late winter and spring, I often add a third fly to attain greater depths and counteract the increasing velocity. Again because of greater depth and tippet size, my steelhead flies are normally tied with 2.8, 3.3, and 3.8mm tungsten beads and a shank full of lead wire on a size 8-12 hook, whereas most of my trout flies are typically tied with 2.3 to 3.3 mm beads and are several hook sizes smaller.

If you’ve read this post you may be thinking, “well what good is all this steelhead equipment going to do me if you don’t share how to use it?” Don’t despair, in my next post we’ll investigate steelhead biology, holding water, approach, and drift technique with a Euro-nymphing rig.

EURO-NYMPHING FOR STEELHEAD PART 2:
WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW? by  DEVIN OLSEN

In this post, I will try and give you some insight into my basic approach for targeting steelhead from winter through spring as the water conditions and run progression changes. I assume most readers will have a basic understanding of the anadromous life history of steelhead so I won’t take time to cover it in depth here. As anglers, we are targeting them in the last few months of their life cycle, at least for the vast majority of them that aren’t able to spawn multiple times in the Columbia River basin. In some rivers, angling is allowed up near the spawning areas and fish can congregated and caught in numbers in March and April before they spawn. However, in most of the rivers I fish, I target steelhead in the lower portions of the watersheds they spawn in. Steelhead do not linger in these reaches for long since the primal urge to continue upstream to spawn is unfailing. As a result, one of the challenges is deciding what rivers to fish and at what times.

In addition to checking river flows to help identify when a river is most fishable, one tool for anglers that is available in many of the rivers of the Columbia basin is the network of PIT tag arrays in a myriad of rivers. PIT tags are glass encapsulated microchips that are energized whenever they pass through an electromagnetic field at a certain frequency produced by a PIT tag antenna array. Each tag has a unique ID that is read by antenna array readers so an individual fish can be tracked in near real time as it migrates through dams and past antenna arrays. In the Columbia River basin, the data for the entire network of arrays is housed and accessible at ptagis.org. While I have access to more specific data as a fisheries biologist, the general public can do quick queries to see how many fish are passing arrays as runs of fish progress. The tagging rate will vary by population, but most of the populations generally have somewhere between 7-10% of the fish tagged so one fish passing an array is generally indicative of 10 or more fish passing the array. This is one tool an angler can use to decide when to target a river, especially if you live somewhat locally and don’t have to plan a multi-day excursion far in advance.

While I often check PIT tag arrays as part of my work and for my fishing plans, much can also be gained by paying attention to water flows and simply to dates on the calendar. Take the graph below for an example, which shows the number of detections at a PIT tag array and the discharge vs. date (in 2015) on one of my favorite steelhead rivers. In the late winter, steelhead respond to flow pulse events and the number of migrants passing is clearly correlated with discharge. As the season progresses however, fish which are still migrating toward their natal grounds must finish their journey regardless of flow. In addition to more fish moving through the system in March and early April, the water temperatures rise and the steelhead bite rises correspondingly. Because of precipitation and temperature patterns, each year is different and the timing of peak migration can change. While I generally can find a few fish on any day throughout the run on most rivers from October through early April, peak success tightly correlates to peak passage of fish moving through the reach of river you are fishing.

Once you are on the river, you obviously have to choose where to fish. A lot of people, who have fished for steelhead with me, ask me what types of water I look for when trying to locate steelhead. It may sound silly, but in the end steelhead are large rainbow trout that have gone to the ocean and back. Therefore, if it is the type of water you would expect a large rainbow trout to be sitting in, you can probably expect a steelhead to hold there as well. Deep runs and pools are obvious choices but pocketwater filled with large boulders can be very productive as well as the water warms. Every once in a while I also get a steelhead surprise while fishing shallower water that I expect only resident trout to be in, so it can pay to cover secondary lies especially when the obvious ones aren’t producing. Within the obvious holding water, the specific lies steelhead use will often change based on water temperature. In a run or pool, I find the heads and faster tails are often productive in October through the first cold spell in November and then again from warm spells in late February through the end of the season. Once the water drops below 43-45°F, I usually find steelhead in the deeper slower portions of a run or pool or just as the current begins to pick up in the tailout. Seams of current, where faster water transitions to slower water, are prime locations providing depth and overhead disturbance (cover) as well as energy savings, which can be important when you’ve traveled upriver 700-800 or more miles through eight massive hydro dams.

The run coming into the pool in the photos below. The highlighted seam of current holds fish when the water reaches the mid-forties and the perfect water level. Most of the time only trout hold here but sometimes drifts are rewarded with takes by their anadromous conspecifics.

Furthermore, if you can find a location that provides depth, structure, and moderate current speed that is also above or below a lengthy set of rapids, your odds are increased even further. For instance, the shelf in the side channel in the photo below is sandwiched in between two rapids and the other side of the river is very shallow and fast. On my first visit here a week ago I landed a two steelhead that were likely funneled through this part of the river while migrating upstream.

Obviously, finding holding water is only the first step. Correct presentation is next. When Euro-nymphing for steelhead, the deeper holding lies they typically inhabit generally necessitate an up and across presentation. I tend to position myself so that the holding lie I am targeting is directly across or slightly downstream from me. I cast quartering upstream within the current seam destined for the lie. I allow the rig to sink without any tension until just above the lie. If you maintain an elevated rod angle the rig will naturally attain tension, and thereby strike detection, once the flies sink to the point where your leader tightens. Adjusting rod elevation, tippet length, and fly weight will help you drift near the substrate without constantly hooking up on it. Any deviation or hesitation of your sighter’s drift should be reacted to with a sharp downstream hookset. I often add a haul to my hooksets on steelhead as well to make sure my hook penetrates their thick dense mouth. Most of the steelhead I lose are early in the fight after a quick turn; a sign of poor hook penetration.

Brown trout aren't the only fish with buck nasty males!

Also, don't forget to swing out your drift if you have gotten through it without needing to set the hook. This lesson was reinforced while I was fishing with my friend Ben Swaner back in March. I was fishing above Benand finishing my drift over a shelf that dropped into a nice pool. Ben told me he saw a steelhead chase my flies up at the end of my drift as I went to make a cast. I wasn't sure that I believed him until the fish chased my flies all the way to the surface on my next drift and tried to roll on them when I went to cast again. On the next few drifts I cast straight across and focused on the swing at the end of the drift. I ended up hooking three steelhead there on magneto stones and squirmy wormies swung at the end of my drift.

My typical approach for setting up a drift to a steelhead holding lie with a Euro-nymphing rig.

Once you have a steelhead hooked the fighting technique you use is critical to being able to land the fish, especially in a timely manner for the fish’s sake. After setting the hook I always turn my rod parallel to the water and directly upstream. I use the rod to apply deep side pressure toward the bank and above my position. Once the fish has tired, I lift the rod up and back over my head and net the steelhead HEAD FIRST! If you net fish this way, the current will aid you if the fish is upstream but hinder you if it is downstream. I’ve had several instances of lost steelhead where my fishing partner tried to net my fish sideways or from behind towards the tail. This usually has resulted in one of my other flies hooking the net and breaking the rig and my connection with the steelhead. Head first is always the way to go. A mesh tailing glove is another option but I believe you can shorten the landing time a lot by netting the fish because it doesn't have to be fully spent to net it like it usually does to tail it. Furthermore, a large deep net gives you a safe place to allow a steelhead to rest and breathe underwater while you get a camera ready.
