If you’re an avid angling addict, there is no better way to break out of your winter hibernation than with a trip to the Situk River in Yakutat, Alaska for some spring steelhead fishing. The isolated community of Yakutat is located in Alaska’s southeast region, along the coast between Cordova and the capital city of Juneau. Yakutat is off the road system and only accessible via boat or plane, so the overall perception seems to be that it’s challenging to travel to this place that is off-the-beaten-path. On the contrary, a quick flight will lead you right into the angling paradise, surrounded by the Tongass National Forest and the scenic Gulf of Alaska. The main attraction, however, is the 16-mile-long Situk River, known for its prolific runs of steelhead trout and Pacific salmon. With the mission to catch (and release) some trophies, we decided to hop on a plane and go see what all the fuss was about…

　もし君が釣りキチなら、スティールヘッド釣りにアラスカのヤクタット村のシータック川へ行く以外に、君を冬眠から目覚めさせる方法はない。陸の孤島ヤクタットはアラスカ州南西部に位置し、Cordvaと州都Juneauの間の海辺にある。他の町から村に通じる道はなく、アクセスはボートか飛行機でのみ可能だ。それで、一般の人の認識は人里から離れた(off-the-beaten-path)そんな場所への旅行は挑戦的である、というものだ。しかし、国立森林公園と風光明媚なアラスカ湾に囲まれた釣り天国へ、君はすぐに飛行で行くことができる場所でもある。その魅力の中心は全長16マイルのSituk川で、そこはスティールヘッドと太平洋鮭の大遡上で有名だ。トロフィーサイズを釣るために、飛行機に乗り込み、その真偽を確かめに行ってきた。

We departed from Anchorage and hopped on a quick Alaska Airlines flight to Yakutat. The total flight distance was roughly 342 air miles southeast of Anchorage. After a quick layover in Juneau, it took about three hours total to make it from point A to point B. There are two daily 737 Alaska Airlines flights in and out of Yakutat, which makes access from other Southeast towns, as well as Seattle and Anchorage, easy to manage.

After gathering our luggage from the Yakutat Airport, we picked up our rental vehicle, an old suburban, which would do just fine, especially since we were bound to be getting pretty dirty over the next week. In remote Alaska communities, old rental vehicles are what you can expect. With no road access to the outside world from Yakutat, they maintain vehicles for as long as possible because the logistics involved with getting new models in can be incredibly challenging.

　　Yakutat空港で荷物を引き取ってから、レンタルカー（旧式のSuburban）を受け取った。来週はちょっと汚れそうと興奮していたので、このクルマはちょうど良い。アラスカの田舎の町では、旧式のレンタルカーはまさに我々が期待していたモノだ。Yakutatから他の町に続く道は無く、新しいクルマの補給は非常にチャレンジングなので、彼らはできるだけ長くクルマを維持しているのだ。

Yakutat has a handful of lodging options to choose from, but we opted for the most affordable choice that would fit our party of three. We checked into a convenient bed & breakfast and we were pleasantly surprised with the hospitality that we received from check-in to check-out. The hosts really went above and beyond to assure that we had a memorable experience in Yakutat. We were fed hearty meals each morning, providing us with ample energy to make it through a long day of fishing.

　　Yakutatで選べる宿のオプションは少ししかないが、我々３人にもっともフィットする手頃な宿を選んだ。快適なベッドと朝食のある宿にチェックインして、その親切な持てなしに大変感激した。それはYakutatで経験すると考えていたものを遙かに超えたものだった。毎日、心のこもった食事をいただいた。一日、長い釣りを行う上での十分なエネルギーだ。

Before we even made it inside to our humble abode, we were greeted by an adorable bush dog. He was always hanging around the outside of the bed & breakfast, just loving life and welcoming as much attention as he could grab from the guests coming and going. A true sweetheart this one!

　　僕らの慎ましい宿に入る前に、かわいい（adorable）ヤブ犬に挨拶された。何時も家の外に繫がれていた。宿にやって来て、そして去って行く客達に、出来るだけ触られるように関心を引きよせて、人生を楽しんでいるようだ。本当に可愛いヤツだ。

After we checked in, we got our gear together and went right down the road to the Situk River to wet some lines while the sun was still shining. It was near the end of April and nearly every day we were spoiled with bluebird skies.

　　宿にチェックインしてから、すぐ釣り道具を準備して、日が明るい間にSituk川へ向かった。４月の下旬であったが、毎日晴れの日でもてなされた。

If you dread Alaska’s notorious summertime combat fishing scene, this place will rock your world. We fished for a week straight and never once saw another person. We had the entire place to ourselves.

　　もし君がアラスカの悪名高い夏の釣り光景を心配しているなら、ここは君のそのイメージを払拭できるだろう。ぼくたちはちょうど１週間釣ったが、他の人と誰とも会わなかった。僕たちだけで独占した。

 

Day 1, hour 1… this is what you get! EPIC. While some choose to enjoy the 13.5 mile-long float from the 9-mile bridge to the lower boat launch, we opted to park and walk so that we could check out as many places as possible.

　　最初の日の１時間で、コレが釣った。一大事件(EPIC)だ。９マイル橋から河口のボート搬入場まで、13.5マイルを楽しむ釣り人もいるが、僕たちはできるだけたくさんの場所をチェックするために、川歩きを選んだ。

Although it’s always important to be aware of current water levels, nearly the entire 16-mile-long Situk River is easily wadeable.

　　普通、川の水量に注意を払うことが大事だが、Situk川の全長16マイルはどこでも渡渉できる。

We chose to catch and release everything, as we were coming for the experience and not with the intention to bring home meat. With that said, we didn’t catch anything under 30 inches! Spring Stealhead fishing did not disappoint.

　　僕たちは釣りを楽しむためにきていて、魚を家に持って帰る気はないので、キャッチ＆リリースで釣った。だから、30インチ以下の魚をキャッチしなかった。春のスティールヘッド釣りは期待を裏切らない。

The Situk River averages about 90 feet wide and three feet deep, so we walked streams and fished from gravel bars the entire trip. Some holes were as deep as 12 feet, which was a blast to cast into and pull out monster piggies.

We achieved complete and utter solitude, but the beauty of the Tongass National Forest that surrounded us really took the experience up a notch.

It was almost as if we were in this middle-earth type of paradise, a million miles away from everything.

The Situk River is one of the most prolific and popular salmon and trout systems in the National Forest System. In addition to strong runs of all five species of Pacific salmon, the Situk hosts incredible Dolly Varden char, cutthroat, resident rainbow trout and Alaska’s largest run of steelhead. We saw a few Dolly’s, but didn’t end up catching anything other than steelhead.

After getting our first day’s fix of fishing, we ventured back into town. Yakutat is home to a population of roughly 663 residents, and is a former Tlingit settlement located on the Gulf of Alaska. Although the population is small, the people in this community are so remarkable. We were treated like gold, with unwavering kindness and extreme helpfulness, which made us never want to leave. We were blown away by how willing the locals were to share their land with us. It was almost as if a level of trust was instantly built, allowing them to help steer us in the right direction, which was simply invaluable.

　　僕らの初日の釣りを終えて町に戻った。Yakutatは人口約663人の村で、アラスカ湾の前トリンギット族居住地にある。人口は少ないが、ここのコミュニティー人々は非常に注目すべき存在だ。心のこもった親切と援助で、僕らは金のように扱われた。その村を去りたくなくなった。現地の人々が僕らと土地を共有したがっていることによって、僕らはすごく感動した。それはほとんど確固たる信頼が出来ているようだった。正しい方向に、僕らを案内してくれながら。それは、計り知れない大切なことだ。

Situated at the base of the St. Elias Mountains, you’ll quickly learn that Yakutat is home to much more than world-renowned fisheries. No matter where you go in town, you’ll be completed awed by the natural beauty of this secluded area. This is what real Alaska is all about—getting away from the crowds and up close and personal with nature and its richness.

　　YakutatはSt.Ellias山の麓に位置していて、世界レベルの漁場であり、安らぎの場であると、僕らはすぐに分かった。町へ行けば、どこでも、君は人気のない場所の自然の美しさに気づくでしょう。これが本当のアラスカだ。豊かな自然の中で、人混みから離れたり、人に立ち寄ることができるのだ。

After spending some time cruising around and exploring on the first day, we were rewarded with an electric sunset on the way back to the B&B. Mother nature showing off her fierce watercolor-painted-sky abilities.

　　初日に周辺を見回って探索した後、B&Bへの帰りに、ワクワクする日没のご褒美があった。荒々しい青空を自慢する大自然。

We kicked off day two with a stop to the local fly shop (which we frequented the entire time we were in Yakutat, Alaska). We decided to use mainly dark colored Dolly Llama and other streamer flies for the majority of the trip. These colored flies are great to use when the sun is shining and it’s bright outside. Green Al’s (a streamer fly) also work well. This fly shop is located in an old 40,000-square-foot World War II-era hangar that houses the Warbird Museum, the Situk Fly Shop, and Bob Miller. A little dose of history, located just a quarter mile away from the Alaska Airlines terminal at the Yakutat Airport.

　　２日目は地元のフライショップから始めた（Yakutatにいるとき、たびたびそこで過ごした）。僕らは、旅の間おもにダークカラーのDolly Llamaフライと他のストリーマーを使うことに決めた。これらのフライは日が落ちて暗くなってから、素晴らしい効果を発揮した。緑のAl’sフライも有効だった。フライショップSituk Fly Shopは古びれた4万平方フィートの第２次世界大戦の格納庫、オーナーBob Miller、ビンテージ飛行機博物館にある。場所はYakutat空港のアラスカ航空ターミナルからちょうど1/4マイルだ。

Wrestling these big, beautiful, brilliant fish was no easy task. With fly fishing, finesse is everything. We used eight weight through ten weight rods. I personally recommend using a nine or a ten weight because of the strength and size of the fish. While we were there we witnessed a seven weight and an eight weight snap on fish. Possibly because of the age and use of the rods, but it was high quality equipment. With a nine or ten weight you still experience all the fight of the fish, and they have a lot more backbone. The backbone the nine and ten weight rods provide will greatly help you turn and control a fish that is constantly heading towards log jams and snags on a very skinny river.

　　大きくて美しく、見事な魚。そのファイトは容易ではない。フライフィッシングでは「策略」がすべてだ。僕たちは＃８～10のロッドを使った。魚のサイズと強さを考えて、個人的には＃８か９を勧める。滞在している間に#7-8はポッキリ折れることを実感した。高品質であっても、ロッドの経年劣化で起こるのだ。＃9-10のロッドで、君は魚と色々な格闘をする。それらのロッドが強靭であっても。#9-10ロッドの強靭さは、流木下に逃げ込む魚の向きを変えたり、非常に細い川で引っかかかるのを避けるのに役に立つ。

You don’t just yank the rod and reel away. You let the fish run, you let them get exhausted, and you meticulously maneuver the line and your position on the bank to get them to shore.

Proper care and handling of these fish is paramount. Take a quick picture, and then gently release the fish back into their natural environment.

It’s a privilege to take part in this great sport, especially in the Last Frontier.

For those traveling to fish the Situk River for the first time (like we were), the Yakutat Ranger District is a great place to gain useful area knowledge that will impart a sense of stewardship towards the outstanding fisheries and local land.

For hundreds of years people have been coming to this exclusive region in Alaska in pursuit of these world-class fisheries. Despite its popularity, when we were here it felt as if we were the only people in the world that knew about this best kept secret.

　　数百年間、この世界レベルの漁場を求めて、人々はアラスカの陸の孤島にやって来た。その有名さにかかわらず、僕たちはここに滞在している間、この穴場を知っているのはあたかも僕らだけのように感じた。

In actuality, the Situk River supports up to a third of all Tongass National Park freshwater sport fishing, and attracts annual travel from all around the world. Although there are challenges and technicalities involved with fishing in Alaska, visiting anglers are rewarded with the opportunity to catch a world-class trophy.

　　実際に、Situk川はTongass国立公園のスポーツ・フィッシングの1/3を支えていて、毎年世界中から旅行客がやって来ている。アラスカの釣りは冒険と技術を必要とされるが、世界水準のトロフィー・サイズを釣る可能性で、釣り客はもてなされる。

The advantage of spring steelhead fishing, if you plan it right, is that you don’t have to worry about things like high river flows and swarms of biting mosquitoes, white sox, and other insects. Other general (uncontrollable) hurdles that can affect your fishing experience include heavy rainfall, snow, clouds, and bears. It is very important to educate yourself about the local area and make sure that you don’t travel into these remote areas without being properly prepared for anything that could go wrong.

　　君が旅行を計画しているのなら、春のスティールヘッド釣りの利点は、髙水位と虫刺されのようなことを心配する必要がないことだ。その他、釣りに影響しそうな問題は、大雨、雪、曇り、そして熊だ。現地について自分で調査することは非常に重要で、何か間違いそうなことに対してその準備をしないで、僻地へ旅すべきではない。

On day two we walked down to the docks in the evening to catch the sunset. Again, same with the backcountry fly fishing on the Situk River, there wasn’t a single sole in sight. It was perfection. What many don’t know about Yakutat is that it is actually home to the largest surfing community in Alaska. Watching the waves crash against the shore while the surfers do their thing in mere 20-foot-high swells is a sight that not everyone would expect to see in Alaska. But Alaska is king at proving that anything is possible in the mighty Last Frontier. Cannon Beach was one of the neatest places to explore and seeing it in person will help any visitor understand why Yakutat is known as Alaska’s surfing mecca.

　　２日目に、日没を見に、夕方波止場を歩いた。Situk川の僻地でのフライフィッシングと同様、また一人ぼっちではなかった。理想的な雰囲気だ。Yakutatがアラスカで最大のサーフィンのメッカであることを、何人が知っているだろうか。サファーが20フィートの高波でサーフィンしながら、波が浜辺で砕ける様子は、誰もがアラスカからイメージする光景ではない。でも、アラスカの広大なラストフロンティアではすべてが可能であることを証明し君臨している。Cannonビーチは散策すべき整備された場所の１つで、なぜYakutatがアラスカのサーフィンのメッカとして知られているか、自分の目で直接見るために、その場所は旅行者に役立つ。

As the setting sun reflected off the towering snow-capped mountains in the distance, the view just kept getting better and better. Yakutat Bay is a unique and exclusively awe-inspiring place.

　　日没が、遠くに聳える冠雪の山々を水面に映しながら、その光景はますます美しくなっていく。Yakutat湾は無二で畏敬の念を抱かさせる場所だ。

The rest of the trip proved to be as equally successful as the first couple of days. We were rewarded with plentiful trophy catches, scenic beauty, exceptional weather, warm hospitality, delicious local food, and phenomenal sunsets each and every day. If Yakutat wasn’t on your bucket list before, we highly recommend this world-class angling destination!

　　旅の残りは､最初の数日と同様に、大成功だった。僕たちは、たくさんのトロフィーサイズの魚を釣り、美しい自然、珍しく晴れた日々、人々の暖かいもてなし、地元の美味しい食事、そして素晴らしい日没を、毎日味わった。もし、君のbucket list(死ぬ前にやっておきたいこと)にYakutatが載っていないなら、世界水準の釣場として､僕らは強く推薦する。

The Alaska Airlines flight from Yakutat back to Anchorage was the same distance, about three hours total, but this time we stopped for a brief layover (puddle jump) in Cordova. The views out the window overlooking Child’s Glacier were absolutely spectacular. Talk about a great way to wrap of the final leg of an insanely awesome Alaska fishing trip!

　　Yakutatからアンカレッジへ戻るアラスカ航空の便は、来た時と同じ距離で約３時間だ。ただしCordovaでの途中下車は入れていない。上空から見る小さな氷河の光景は本当に雄大だ。滅茶苦茶すごい、アラスカの釣り旅行の最後に、素晴らしい方法について話せ。

This is a sensitive subject—the fly-fishing version of bringing up politics at a mixed family barbecue, or religion at the pub. The pegged egg. If you have no idea what I am talking about (congratulations!) you need not read any farther. Go about your day…and the rest of your enjoyable fishing life. But, if you know exactly what I am talking about, well…you most likely have an opinion on the subject. Probably a fairly strong, well-entrenched opinion. For those not in the know and not following my advise to look away…here is the low down. “Pegging an egg” is taking a plastic bead the size and color of a trout or salmon egg, threading it onto your leader and pegging it into place with a sliver of wooden toothpick—then tying on a bare hook. The idea is that the fish eats the “egg” and the act of setting the hook dislodges the pegged bead and slides the bare hook into the mouth of the fish…or at least the vicinity of the mouth. Spawning trout and salmon have a wicked desire to eat eggs, so this method is unbelievably effective. Although, it could be argued (and is by many) that this is just a creative way to “floss” spawning fish…or is just a thinly veiled form of snagging—often in the face and eye of the fish. Is it not snagging? Let me ask this: if you are drifting a two-fly dry/dropper rig and a trout rises to the dry, but misses it…and you hook the trout in the belly with the dropper nymph (this happens all the time)…is this not an accidentally snagged fish? Is this not the same thing? Or is the bare hook hanging menacingly behind the bead a very deliberate attempt to snag a fish? If so, should it be legal?

A close friend of mine claims there is no difference between a plastic bead threaded onto fishing line and a more conventional “fly” tied with some synthetic materials. I badly want to disagree with him…but I honestly don’t know the answer. I once won an argument in a fly shop with none other than legendary fly tier AK Best about a similar topic. He put forth the notion that something tied using anything other than natural fur and feather was not a true “fly”. My reply was simple—you tie on nothing but bone hooks, then…right? Nope? Metal hooks? OK, then… So, what is the definition of a fly? Does it have to be tied by hand? Does it have to have thread? When does it cross realms into the world of “lures”? Again…I honestly do not have the answer. There is a sea of grey and many animated opinions on the subject. But, one thing I do know for sure…if a classically-tied Jock Scott is on one end of the argument, the pegged egg is certainly on the exact opposite. And, if you peg beads on the river and feel you are still fly fishing…you have made a very clear personal statement declaring that the act of fly fishing has absolutely nothing to do with what you have tied to the end of your leader. The only remaining question is; if you skewer a night crawler onto a treble hook and heave it into a trout stream…with a fly rod…is that still considered fly fishing? Or is it actually bait fishing? Is it the rod in your hand or the object at the end of your line that defines you as a fly fisherman? Is a man fly fishing if he is using a spinning rod with a clear casting bubble and a fly? No, right? Again…is it the rod in your hand or the object at the end of your line that defines you as a fly fisherman? Or is it both?

私の友人は釣り糸に通されたプラスティック・ビーズと化学繊維で捲かれた従来のフライの間に違いは無いと､主張している。私はとても彼の主張に同意したくないが、正直に言うと答えを知らない。同じような話を、他ならぬ（none other tan)伝説のタイヤーAK Bestとあるフライショップで議論して一勝したことがある。自然の革と羽毛以外の何かを使って捲いたものは本当のフライで無い、という意見を彼は持っている。私の反応は簡単だったーあなたはただ骨のフックにタイイングしているのでは？違う？金属のフック？それじゃ、フライの定義は何か？手で巻かなければダメか？巻かなければならないか？ルアーの世界と領域がクロスしている？再度、私は本当に答えをもっていないのだ。この話題についてはたくさんの活発な意見があり、グレーゾーンがある。しかし、伝統的方法で巻かれたJock Scottフライは議論の片方にあり、pegged eggは真逆方向にあると思っている。そして川でビーズを使ったなら、フライフィッシングをしていると感じるし、フライフィッシングの動作はリーダの端に結んだモノで、まったく何も妨げないと、ハッキリと言っただろう。だた１つ残っている疑問は、もし３本フックに虫を突き刺し、スライロッドで渓流にキャストしたら、それはまだフライフィッシングと考えられるか？また、実際はベイトフィッシングか？手のロッドを持ち、ラインの端にモノがある。フライの釣人と定義できるか？彼は透明な浮きとフライを付けて、スピニングロッドを使っているなら、フライフィッシングしていることになるか？イイや？。。フライ釣り人として定義するのは、手にロッド、ラインの端にモノがあることか？またはその両方か？

As I predicted, this story has generated a lot of discussion. Perfect. I wanted all of us (as fishermen) to think about this topic and have an intelligent conversation about it. It is important and very topical. There are several states intending to ban the practice very soon. The argument has gone on here in blog form as well as Facebook, and in the fly shop and at home... I have spoken to many hard-core bead peggers, as well as some of the more respected fly designers in the world...and some of the Old Guard fly fishermen. The conversations seemed to gravitate to three different topics, the first two being: What constitutes a fly? And, what constitutes a fly rod? It became apparent early that most fishermen considered fly fishing something that must be done with a fly rod at one end and a fly at the other—but then, semantics entered the ring! The argument about what a fly rod is, well, that one was fairly easy. Most fishermen are willing to agree on a fairly broad description of what a fly rod is. The difference between a fly and a lure? Now that generated some debate. The general consensus was that if it is tied, it is a fly…molded or formed (i.e. glue gun egg) then it was considered a lure. Half of each? Generally accepted as a fly—benefit of the doubt, I guess? But, the ONLY fishermen who thought a plastic bead was a fly was…well, no one. The retort I got from the Bead Fishermen was sort of defensive. Some attempted to put a plastic bead into the same category as a fly that incorporates a touch of foam or synthetic flash—a logic I have a hard time following, even in my open-minded state. This logic kind of insinuates that an eight-inch jointed Rapala could be called a fly—WTF? So, the conclusion (for now) is that bead pegging is not fly fishing! OK. Not that big of deal. Most of us have spent a portion of our fishing life as a “conventional gear” fisherman already anyway. Most state fishing regulations are exactly the same for both styles. No Bait—Flies & Artificial Lures Only. Artificial lures…I guess that’s you guys, Beaders. Again, no big deal!

Then the conversation got heated. The third question everyone migrated to was: Is it snagging? This one sort of makes the fist two questions a bit moot, don’t ya think? The self-proclaimed Beaders in the room did some very odd, but creative mental gymnastics to separate what they were doing from the illegal act of “snagging”—frantic semantic scrambling is a better way to put it. The argument degenerated/evolved into one party offering up hypothetical scenarios and the other party attempting to categorize it as Snagging, Foul Hooking (apparently the accidental form of the deliberate act of Snagging) and Fair Practice. If you are fishing a two-fly dry/dropper rig and a trout rises to the dry, but misses it…and you hook the trout in the belly with the dropper nymph? Unanimously…Foul Hooked. Now, let us say you are fishing Gunnison Canyon during the big stonefly hatch. Your rig is a big #6 Soffa Pillow dry…with the hook clipped off! Presumably to make it look more natural on the surface of the water. And you have somehow rigged a bare treble hook a foot or so behind it. When a 20 inch brown trout takes the dry fly the fisherman yanks back…. OK, ya getting the point?

My own conclusion is logical and unarguably simple. If you fool a fish into willingly taking your disguised hook into its mouth…you are “angling”. If you force a hook into a fish…you are “snagging”. If you purposely distance the hook away from the “lure” object in which you are fishing (be it two feet or two inches)…and then pull the hook into the fish once it has taken the “lure’…then you are still snagging fish. I guess most laws have just not caught up with our conniving technology…

　　Late summer in Alaska has all of my angling buddies and I excited for the pursuit of trophy size wild rainbow trout and char. We are anxious to get our beads out during the peak of the salmon spawn with high hopes for catching some enormous size trout. Fishing beads with a fly rod is not something new. Beads have been and continue to be a very popular method among many experienced trout fisherman and professional guides in Alaska because it is incredibly effective. The technique of “pegging” a bead is easy to learn and simple to employ, however there are a few important aspects anglers new to this method of fishing should be familiar with in order to make best use of this system of fishing. This article is intended to introduce anglers who are unfamiliar with bead fishing and will focus on the basics in order to get an angler started on their way to using this efficient system of fishing and increasing their catch rates of beautiful wild trout in Alaska.

【Bead 101】Local resident species of trout can be found in many of Alaska’s fresh water rivers, streams, and creeks which have pacific salmon migrating to spawn. These native fish are eagerly following the salmon and gorging themselves on deposited salmon eggs and rotting fish flesh floating in the current or along the bottom of the streambed. Beads simply imitate drifting salmon eggs.

　Beads are not a fly by definition in Alaska fishing regulation; they are considered and defined as attractors. Make sure you check ADF&G regulations prior to using beads, especially in fly fishing only waters. Although they are not considered to be flies, just like traditional flies used in fly fishing, the angler is attempting to match the hatch by using a small colored sphere shaped object with a hole through the middle of it for "pegging" to a line, which replicates a salmon egg traveling downstream.

Beads come in numerous sizes and countless colors in order to represent the various types of eggs from the different salmon species and mimic particular phases the eggs have reached. It can be difficult to wade through all the choices and selections. Several companies specialize in manufacturing trout beads and items can easily be located and purchased ready to use from various local sources in Alaska or from the Internet. Some DIY bead fishermen acquire their beads from hobby or craft stores and custom paint them and applying different colors and shades of nail polish to achieve a desired effect. I personally really like the pre-packaged assorted bead kits that Alaska Fly Fishing Goods has to offer, you get a good selection of colors and sizes and eliminates a lot of the guess work. I picked up a kit for rainbow trout and another for steelhead and have used them with great success.

【Bead Size & Color Bead sizes】 I typically use for trout range in sizes of 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Size considerations include what type of salmon are present spawning, and flow speed of the water. Sockeye (Red) salmon eggs are about equal in size to a 6mm bead, Pinks and Silver salmon eggs get slightly larger at about 8mm, and the largest eggs are from the Chum and King salmon similar in size to approximately a 10mm bead. Water speed will also affect the size best to use. Slower current allows for a smaller bead to be presented and allows a target to be picked up easier by a fish. Swift running channels will have the target drifting much faster and be more difficult for a fish to sight in on, thus a larger bead will be more prudent to use.

Bead color selection is closely tied to what eggs look like which are present when you’re fishing. Before I even cast a line, I survey the slack water areas for any signs of salmon eggs and do my best at matching the color pattern of the eggs already present in the water. Salmon eggs tend to be brighter when freshly deposited and get lighter in color as the stay in the water longer, turning mottled with uneven color tones, eventually fading turning a more solid in tone and color. If I can’t find any salmon eggs to match, I start fishing by using orange mottled or pink mottled tones of colored beads, which closely match fresher deposited eggs. If it’s late in the spawn I go with more faded solid colors. My preferred colors are tangerine and peach in mottled patterns, however carrying a good selection is best choice.

【Pegging a Bead】Rigging a bead, or “pegging” a bead, for dead drifting is fairly simple. Although there are a couple different techniques you can use when fixing a bead to the line, I will be keeping things simple and basic procedure I normally use. I like using a 10lb test fluorocarbon leader of between seven and nine feet in length. I begin by threading the selected bead on the leader running end and sliding it on the line. The next step is attaching an appropriate hook; I use short shank hooks in sizes 4, 6, and 8 matching the bead size and I prefer using an improved clinch knot. Once the hook is secured to the end of the line, slide the bead into a position about two inches just above the hook. Insert the tapered end of a toothpick into the bead hole, pushing in on the toothpick and wedge the line between the toothpick and bead hole, this will secure the toothpick like a “peg” in the hole of the bead and lock the bead into a fixed position on the line. The final step is cutting the excess remaining toothpick outside the bead hole with a clipper so it appears flush.

Some companies have developed plastic pegging material which substitutes for a toothpick. It does have certain advantages by being less abrasive on the leader and can also be colored to match the bead color. Carrying a few split shot may come in handy also, as small sized split shot may be added as needed to the leader assisting the bead to sink in the water column and provide a good drift in deeper holes. The use of an indicator on the line can also be useful, however not necessary.

　　The concept for fishing the bead is to cast it upstream at about a 45 degree angle from your target area, and mend the line to allow the bead to dead drift naturally in the current (very similar to executing a nymphing technique). Be patient and make sure to run the bead more than a few times over your target area. The fish will strike hard and fast. Try to avoid letting the current put drag on the line, or swinging the line like a pendulum, and allow the current to “dead drift” your bead as naturally as possible. Changing the color and size of your bead may improve fishing also.

【Practice makes Perfect】Learning to bead fish will take some effort and practice. Bead fishing season in small streams and creeks for me will last through the fall and into late November. There is plenty of time to learn this technique and be fairly successful after only a couple outings. You will see with time vested in this method your catch rate will significantly increase.

Hooks tend to set just on the outside of the corner of the mouth, and practicing selective harvest or catch & release is done with far less stress to the fish. I don't get as excited about fishing egg patterns as some fishermen do. But, there's good reason for their excitement: beads work. It's a simple fact. When spawning fish are in a river dropping eggs, fish are eating them. In these situations, fishing an egg imitation will almost invariably out fish any other method available to the angler. That angler typically has two options in the world of fly fishing: the more traditional yarn-based egg patterns such the Glo Bug or the more recently adopted plastic bead egg imitations.

Beads, however, are considered a dirty word by some fly fishermen. Most commonly, bead detractors will claim that "beads aren't flies", typically because they're made of plastic, not hand tied and so on. Essentially, those who would sneer at the idea of fishing a plastic bead are making the argument that glo bugs, antron eggs and other similar yarn-based egg patterns represent a more purist, creative presentation of an egg imitation. Anyone who has tied an egg pattern - which takes about 10 seconds even for a scandalously unskilled fly tyer like myself -- should quickly dismiss this as nonsense. More important, however, is the reality that anyone that has fished both beads and egg patterns should quickly realize many reasons why beads are considerably superior to their yarn-based alternatives.

1.BEADS ARE MORE REALISTIC（ビーズはよりリアリスティックだ）

Beads, practically inarguably, are a better imitation of real eggs than an imitation made of yarn. Beads are available in an almost endless array of colors and sizes, in varying degrees of opacity, with and without mottling, with and without blood dots and so on.

2.THEY'RE CHEAPER（安価だ）

Your typical bead is about one-tenth to one-third the price of an egg pattern, if you're going by typical fly store prices. If you tie your own flies, this difference will be smaller, but you're still going to be paying almost as much for a bare hook as you will for a bead. When you consider that egg patterns catch lots of fish and thus take lots of abuse, this difference adds up quickly.

Beads are practically indestructable, at least during exposure to the normal rigors of fly fishing. Yarn egg patterns, on the other hand, don't hold up very well. Rocks, fish teeth, branches and other in-stream hazards shred yarn egg patterns easily, making them lose their shape and profile, rendering them unfishable.

4.MORE NATURAL FLOTATION（より自然な浮遊）

Many plastic beads are designed with neutral or near-neutral buoyancy in an effort to mimic real fish eggs. This means that when they float in the water, they do so the same way that natural fish eggs do. The result is a more realistic presentation, which equals more fooled fish.

5.SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER FISH MORTALITY（魚を殺さない）

The evidence for this is anecdotal, but considerable. If you're pegging your bead an inch or two above your hook (which you should be), fishing beads normally results in a jaw hook set as opposed to a swallowed egg and a deep-hooked fish. Trout and other fish that are gorging on eggs are doing just that, gorging. Eggs are taken with abandon and are often swallowed. If your hook is trailing a couple inches behind your egg imitation, setting the hook will more reliably result in fish that are hooked in corner of the jaw or elsewhere in the mouth, instead of down deep where the chances of a successful release are greatly decreased.

Care and Feeding of your new Custom Beads

So congratulations, you finally did it. You got some of those super-spiffy AFFG Guide Model beads, a few packs of the new TroutFood beads, or maybe you went whole hog and got some of those Metal Magnet steelhead beads. You are all set for a late summer crack at some big trout, or a fall excursion into steelhead country. To help you down the path to bead enlightenment and "fish nirvana" there are a few things you should know about the care and feeding of your new custom beads to make the experience a good one for both of you.

The most important thing you should know is that - even with all the love and attention lavished upon the Guide Model, TroutFood, and Metal Magnet beads during the painting process and the extra care that our team goes through to ensure that the finish-coat is applied just right - all painted beads will chip if treated improperly. We DO put a special layer of hard finish on them, but that still won't protect them from chipping if they are abused. Here are a few things you can do to prolong the life of your custom beads...

Get a bead box, and use it. If your beads are rollin' around in the bottom of your pack or bag with your pliers and nippers and other fishing paraphernalia, they are much more likely to be scratched and damaged than if they are in a nice, safe bead box. As a bonus, bead boxes also provide a safe nest for your hooks, shot, and pegs, so those don't end up in every nook and cranny of your fishing bag.

For Trout and char, fish lighter weights. Getting down is typically the name of the game when beading for  trout, but pounding and clanking on the bottom all day isn't absolutely necessary (or desirable) in many situations. We like to fish a leader that is about 1.2X longer (to the weight) than the deepest portion of the run we are in - an adjustable indicator is a pretty good tool to get us to that number. For weight, we use the smallest shot we can get away with so the lead touches down every so often in the run. As an added bonus with this rig, your indicator doesn't hop and bounce all over the place...that is, until a trout inhales your bead.

For Steelhead, fish your beads on a short-leader rig. Steelhead will move quite a ways to take an offering if they are in the mood, so why bang your beads on the bottom all day? Unlike fishing for trout with beads, steelhead aren't feeding on spawn, so the bead doesn't have to be in the "magic foot" on the bottom to catch fish. Rock-thumpin' is the number-one cause of most bead damage, and with the short-leader rig, you can fish your bead above those nasty, paint-chippin' rocks and STILL catch fish.

Roll cast often. The number-two cause of most bead damage is whackin' your bead on something hard (trees, boat gunwales, high banks, your buddy's head) during the backcast. You can alleviate this with a roll cast in most every situation. Another one of  the advantages of short-leader and light-weight rigs is that they come out of the water relatively easy, making roll casting a breeze.

Despite all of the above advice, you will probably chip a custom bead sooner or later...Relax. It isn't the end of the world.

　ときどきロールキャスト。ビーズを傷つける２番目の原因は、バックキャスト中にブーズを何か固いモノ(木、ボートの船縁、岸、友人の頭）に叩きつけることだ。これはロールキャストを用いることで、大半は緩和できる。ショートリーダと軽いオモリのもう１つの利点は比較的簡単に水から出せ、難なくロールキャストが出来る点だ。先のアドバイスにもかかわらず、遅かれ早かれビーズは欠けてしまう。しかし落ち着いて。世界の終わりでないのだから。

 

What to do if your bead gets a finish-chip. Take a look at your bead every once in a while to make sure it is both positioned correctly on your leader, and free of chips...this is especially important after a hang-up or if you do accidentally whack it on something while casting. If it is chipped, change it out for a new bead, but don't just fling the chipped bead in the trash can. You can repair most minor finish cracks and chips if you find them early enough - that is, before a lot of water-slippage occurs behind the finish. Put the damaged bead in a dry place where it won't get jostled around and lose more finish, then touch it up with some clear nail polish when you get them home and dry. This will keep the bead-finish from cracking more and allow you to get a few extra days out of it. As an added bonus, the application of clear nail polish often melts the original finish of your custom bead, making for a very "organic" looking egg - not a bad thing.

So get yourself a bead box, practice up on that roll cast, and don't put on too much lead. Also, it helps if you have a "glasses and fake moustache" disguise when you go shopping for clear polish in the "Nail Care" aisle of your local market...
