If you’re an avid angling addict, there is no better way to break out of your winter hibernation than with a trip to the Situk River in Yakutat, Alaska for some spring steelhead fishing. The isolated community of Yakutat is located in Alaska’s southeast region, along the coast between Cordova and the capital city of Juneau. Yakutat is off the road system and only accessible via boat or plane, so the overall perception seems to be that it’s challenging to travel to this place that is off-the-beaten-path. On the contrary, a quick flight will lead you right into the angling paradise, surrounded by the Tongass National Forest and the scenic Gulf of Alaska. The main attraction, however, is the 16-mile-long Situk River, known for its prolific runs of steelhead trout and Pacific salmon. With the mission to catch (and release) some trophies, we decided to hop on a plane and go see what all the fuss was about…

　もし君が釣りキチなら、スティールヘッド釣りにアラスカのヤクタット村のシータック川へ行く以外に、君を冬眠から目覚めさせる方法はない。陸の孤島ヤクタットはアラスカ州南西部に位置し、Cordvaと州都Juneauの間の海辺にある。他の町から村に通じる道はなく、アクセスはボートか飛行機でのみ可能だ。それで、一般の人の認識は人里から離れた(off-the-beaten-path)そんな場所への旅行は挑戦的である、というものだ。しかし、国立森林公園と風光明媚なアラスカ湾に囲まれた釣り天国へ、君はすぐに飛行で行くことができる場所でもある。その魅力の中心は全長16マイルのSituk川で、そこはスティールヘッドと太平洋鮭の大遡上で有名だ。トロフィーサイズを釣るために、飛行機に乗り込み、その真偽を確かめに行ってきた。

We departed from Anchorage and hopped on a quick Alaska Airlines flight to Yakutat. The total flight distance was roughly 342 air miles southeast of Anchorage. After a quick layover in Juneau, it took about three hours total to make it from point A to point B. There are two daily 737 Alaska Airlines flights in and out of Yakutat, which makes access from other Southeast towns, as well as Seattle and Anchorage, easy to manage.

After gathering our luggage from the Yakutat Airport, we picked up our rental vehicle, an old suburban, which would do just fine, especially since we were bound to be getting pretty dirty over the next week. In remote Alaska communities, old rental vehicles are what you can expect. With no road access to the outside world from Yakutat, they maintain vehicles for as long as possible because the logistics involved with getting new models in can be incredibly challenging.

　　Yakutat空港で荷物を引き取ってから、レンタルカー（旧式のSuburban）を受け取った。来週はちょっと汚れそうと興奮していたので、このクルマはちょうど良い。アラスカの田舎の町では、旧式のレンタルカーはまさに我々が期待していたモノだ。Yakutatから他の町に続く道は無く、新しいクルマの補給は非常にチャレンジングなので、彼らはできるだけ長くクルマを維持しているのだ。

Yakutat has a handful of lodging options to choose from, but we opted for the most affordable choice that would fit our party of three. We checked into a convenient bed & breakfast and we were pleasantly surprised with the hospitality that we received from check-in to check-out. The hosts really went above and beyond to assure that we had a memorable experience in Yakutat. We were fed hearty meals each morning, providing us with ample energy to make it through a long day of fishing.

　　Yakutatで選べる宿のオプションは少ししかないが、我々３人にもっともフィットする手頃な宿を選んだ。快適なベッドと朝食のある宿にチェックインして、その親切な持てなしに大変感激した。それはYakutatで経験すると考えていたものを遙かに超えたものだった。毎日、心のこもった食事をいただいた。一日、長い釣りを行う上での十分なエネルギーだ。

Before we even made it inside to our humble abode, we were greeted by an adorable bush dog. He was always hanging around the outside of the bed & breakfast, just loving life and welcoming as much attention as he could grab from the guests coming and going. A true sweetheart this one!

　　僕らの慎ましい宿に入る前に、かわいい（adorable）ヤブ犬に挨拶された。何時も家の外に繫がれていた。宿にやって来て、そして去って行く客達に、出来るだけ触られるように関心を引きよせて、人生を楽しんでいるようだ。本当に可愛いヤツだ。

After we checked in, we got our gear together and went right down the road to the Situk River to wet some lines while the sun was still shining. It was near the end of April and nearly every day we were spoiled with bluebird skies.

　　宿にチェックインしてから、すぐ釣り道具を準備して、日が明るい間にSituk川へ向かった。４月の下旬であったが、毎日晴れの日でもてなされた。

If you dread Alaska’s notorious summertime combat fishing scene, this place will rock your world. We fished for a week straight and never once saw another person. We had the entire place to ourselves.

　　もし君がアラスカの悪名高い夏の釣り光景を心配しているなら、ここは君のそのイメージを払拭できるだろう。ぼくたちはちょうど１週間釣ったが、他の人と誰とも会わなかった。僕たちだけで独占した。

 

Day 1, hour 1… this is what you get! EPIC. While some choose to enjoy the 13.5 mile-long float from the 9-mile bridge to the lower boat launch, we opted to park and walk so that we could check out as many places as possible.

　　最初の日の１時間で、コレが釣った。一大事件(EPIC)だ。９マイル橋から河口のボート搬入場まで、13.5マイルを楽しむ釣り人もいるが、僕たちはできるだけたくさんの場所をチェックするために、川歩きを選んだ。

Although it’s always important to be aware of current water levels, nearly the entire 16-mile-long Situk River is easily wadeable.

　　普通、川の水量に注意を払うことが大事だが、Situk川の全長16マイルはどこでも渡渉できる。

We chose to catch and release everything, as we were coming for the experience and not with the intention to bring home meat. With that said, we didn’t catch anything under 30 inches! Spring Stealhead fishing did not disappoint.

　　僕たちは釣りを楽しむためにきていて、魚を家に持って帰る気はないので、キャッチ＆リリースで釣った。だから、30インチ以下の魚をキャッチしなかった。春のスティールヘッド釣りは期待を裏切らない。

The Situk River averages about 90 feet wide and three feet deep, so we walked streams and fished from gravel bars the entire trip. Some holes were as deep as 12 feet, which was a blast to cast into and pull out monster piggies.

We achieved complete and utter solitude, but the beauty of the Tongass National Forest that surrounded us really took the experience up a notch.

It was almost as if we were in this middle-earth type of paradise, a million miles away from everything.

The Situk River is one of the most prolific and popular salmon and trout systems in the National Forest System. In addition to strong runs of all five species of Pacific salmon, the Situk hosts incredible Dolly Varden char, cutthroat, resident rainbow trout and Alaska’s largest run of steelhead. We saw a few Dolly’s, but didn’t end up catching anything other than steelhead.

　　Situkは国立森林エリアの中で、鮭と鱒が最も豊かな川の１つとして知られている。５種類の太平洋鮭の豊かな遡上に加え、信じられないくらいのドリーバーデン、カットスロート、ニジマス、そしてアラスカで最大のスティールヘッドの遡上がある。

After getting our first day’s fix of fishing, we ventured back into town. Yakutat is home to a population of roughly 663 residents, and is a former Tlingit settlement located on the Gulf of Alaska. Although the population is small, the people in this community are so remarkable. We were treated like gold, with unwavering kindness and extreme helpfulness, which made us never want to leave. We were blown away by how willing the locals were to share their land with us. It was almost as if a level of trust was instantly built, allowing them to help steer us in the right direction, which was simply invaluable.

　　僕らの初日の釣りを終えて町に戻った。Yakutatは人口約663人の村で、アラスカ湾の前トリンギット族居住地にある。人口は少ないが、ここのコミュニティー人々は非常に注目すべき存在だ。心のこもった親切と援助で、僕らは金のように扱われた。その村を去りたくなくなった。現地の人々が僕らと土地を共有したがっていることによって、僕らはすごく感動した。それはほとんど確固たる信頼が出来ているようだった。正しい方向に、僕らを案内してくれながら。それは、計り知れない大切なことだ。

Situated at the base of the St. Elias Mountains, you’ll quickly learn that Yakutat is home to much more than world-renowned fisheries. No matter where you go in town, you’ll be completed awed by the natural beauty of this secluded area. This is what real Alaska is all about—getting away from the crowds and up close and personal with nature and its richness.

　　YakutatはSt.Ellias山の麓に位置していて、世界レベルの漁場であり、安らぎの場であると、僕らはすぐに分かった。町へ行けば、どこでも、君は人気のない場所の自然の美しさに気づくでしょう。これが本当のアラスカだ。豊かな自然の中で、人混みから離れたり、人に立ち寄ることができるのだ。

After spending some time cruising around and exploring on the first day, we were rewarded with an electric sunset on the way back to the B&B. Mother nature showing off her fierce watercolor-painted-sky abilities.

　　初日に周辺を見回って探索した後、B&Bへの帰りに、ワクワクする日没のご褒美があった。荒々しい青空を自慢する大自然。

We kicked off day two with a stop to the local fly shop (which we frequented the entire time we were in Yakutat, Alaska). We decided to use mainly dark colored Dolly Llama and other streamer flies for the majority of the trip. These colored flies are great to use when the sun is shining and it’s bright outside. Green Al’s (a streamer fly) also work well. This fly shop is located in an old 40,000-square-foot World War II-era hangar that houses the Warbird Museum, the Situk Fly Shop, and Bob Miller. A little dose of history, located just a quarter mile away from the Alaska Airlines terminal at the Yakutat Airport.

　　２日目は地元のフライショップから始めた（Yakutatにいるとき、たびたびそこで過ごした）。僕らは、旅の間おもにダークカラーのDolly Llamaフライと他のストリーマーを使うことに決めた。これらのフライは日が落ちて暗くなってから、素晴らしい効果を発揮した。緑のAl’sフライも有効だった。フライショップSituk Fly Shopは古びれた4万平方フィートの第２次世界大戦の格納庫、オーナーBob Miller、ビンテージ飛行機博物館にある。場所はYakutat空港のアラスカ航空ターミナルからちょうど1/4マイルだ。

Wrestling these big, beautiful, brilliant fish was no easy task. With fly fishing, finesse is everything. We used eight weight through ten weight rods. I personally recommend using a nine or a ten weight because of the strength and size of the fish. While we were there we witnessed a seven weight and an eight weight snap on fish. Possibly because of the age and use of the rods, but it was high quality equipment. With a nine or ten weight you still experience all the fight of the fish, and they have a lot more backbone. The backbone the nine and ten weight rods provide will greatly help you turn and control a fish that is constantly heading towards log jams and snags on a very skinny river.

　　大きくて美しく、見事な魚。そのファイトは容易ではない。フライフィッシングでは「策略」がすべてだ。僕たちは＃８～10のロッドを使った。魚のサイズと強さを考えて、個人的には＃８か９を勧める。滞在している間に#7-8はポッキリ折れることを実感した。高品質であっても、ロッドの経年劣化で起こるのだ。＃9-10のロッドで、君は魚と色々な格闘をする。それらのロッドが強靭であっても。#9-10ロッドの強靭さは、流木下に逃げ込む魚の向きを変えたり、非常に細い川で引っかかかるのを避けるのに役に立つ。

You don’t just yank the rod and reel away. You let the fish run, you let them get exhausted, and you meticulously maneuver the line and your position on the bank to get them to shore.

　　ロッドとリールをグイッと引っ張るな。魚を泳がせて、疲れさせろ。そして、細心の注意を払って、魚が岸辺に来るようにラインと自分の位置をうまく調整せよ。

Proper care and handling of these fish is paramount. Take a quick picture, and then gently release the fish back into their natural environment.

It’s a privilege to take part in this great sport, especially in the Last Frontier.

For those traveling to fish the Situk River for the first time (like we were), the Yakutat Ranger District is a great place to gain useful area knowledge that will impart a sense of stewardship towards the outstanding fisheries and local land.

For hundreds of years people have been coming to this exclusive region in Alaska in pursuit of these world-class fisheries. Despite its popularity, when we were here it felt as if we were the only people in the world that knew about this best kept secret.

　　数百年間、この世界レベルの漁場を求めて、人々はアラスカの陸の孤島にやって来た。その有名さにかかわらず、僕たちはここに滞在している間、この穴場を知っているのはあたかも僕らだけのように感じた。

In actuality, the Situk River supports up to a third of all Tongass National Park freshwater sport fishing, and attracts annual travel from all around the world. Although there are challenges and technicalities involved with fishing in Alaska, visiting anglers are rewarded with the opportunity to catch a world-class trophy.

　　実際に、Situk川はTongass国立公園のスポーツ・フィッシングの1/3を支えていて、毎年世界中から旅行客がやって来ている。アラスカの釣りは冒険と技術を必要とされるが、世界水準のトロフィー・サイズを釣る可能性で、釣り客はもてなされる。

The advantage of spring steelhead fishing, if you plan it right, is that you don’t have to worry about things like high river flows and swarms of biting mosquitoes, white sox, and other insects. Other general (uncontrollable) hurdles that can affect your fishing experience include heavy rainfall, snow, clouds, and bears. It is very important to educate yourself about the local area and make sure that you don’t travel into these remote areas without being properly prepared for anything that could go wrong.

　　君が旅行を計画しているのなら、春のスティールヘッド釣りの利点は、髙水位と虫刺されのようなことを心配する必要がないことだ。その他、釣りに影響しそうな問題は、大雨、雪、曇り、そして熊だ。現地について自分で調査することは非常に重要で、何か間違いそうなことに対してその準備をしないで、僻地へ旅すべきではない。

On day two we walked down to the docks in the evening to catch the sunset. Again, same with the backcountry fly fishing on the Situk River, there wasn’t a single sole in sight. It was perfection. What many don’t know about Yakutat is that it is actually home to the largest surfing community in Alaska. Watching the waves crash against the shore while the surfers do their thing in mere 20-foot-high swells is a sight that not everyone would expect to see in Alaska. But Alaska is king at proving that anything is possible in the mighty Last Frontier. Cannon Beach was one of the neatest places to explore and seeing it in person will help any visitor understand why Yakutat is known as Alaska’s surfing mecca.

　　２日目に、日没を見に、夕方波止場を歩いた。Situk川の僻地でのフライフィッシングと同様、また一人ぼっちではなかった。理想的な雰囲気だ。Yakutatがアラスカで最大のサーフィンのメッカであることを、何人が知っているだろうか。サファーが20フィートの高波でサーフィンしながら、波が浜辺で砕ける様子は、誰もがアラスカからイメージする光景ではない。でも、アラスカの広大なラストフロンティアではすべてが可能であることを証明し君臨している。Cannonビーチは散策すべき整備された場所の１つで、なぜYakutatがアラスカのサーフィンのメッカとして知られているか、自分の目で直接見るために、その場所は旅行者に役立つ。

As the setting sun reflected off the towering snow-capped mountains in the distance, the view just kept getting better and better. Yakutat Bay is a unique and exclusively awe-inspiring place.

　　日没が、遠くに聳える冠雪の山々を水面に映しながら、その光景はますます美しくなっていく。Yakutat湾は無二で畏敬の念を抱かさせる場所だ。

The rest of the trip proved to be as equally successful as the first couple of days. We were rewarded with plentiful trophy catches, scenic beauty, exceptional weather, warm hospitality, delicious local food, and phenomenal sunsets each and every day. If Yakutat wasn’t on your bucket list before, we highly recommend this world-class angling destination!

　　旅の残りは､最初の数日と同様に、大成功だった。僕たちは、たくさんのトロフィーサイズの魚を釣り、美しい自然、珍しく晴れた日々、人々の暖かいもてなし、地元の美味しい食事、そして素晴らしい日没を、毎日味わった。もし、君のbucket list(死ぬ前にやっておきたいこと)にYakutatが載っていないなら、世界水準の釣場として､僕らは強く推薦する。

The Alaska Airlines flight from Yakutat back to Anchorage was the same distance, about three hours total, but this time we stopped for a brief layover (puddle jump) in Cordova. The views out the window overlooking Child’s Glacier were absolutely spectacular. Talk about a great way to wrap of the final leg of an insanely awesome Alaska fishing trip!

　　Yakutatからアンカレッジへ戻るアラスカ航空の便は、来た時と同じ距離で約３時間だ。ただしCordovaでの途中下車は入れていない。上空から見る小さな氷河の光景は本当に雄大だ。滅茶苦茶すごい、アラスカの釣り旅行の最後に、素晴らしい方法について話せ。

　今年も、4月にアラスカの人口600人ほどの小さな村Yakutatに行って来た。村外れを流れる小さな川Situkでスティールヘッドを釣るためだ。Situkについてはすでに2012の釣行で、川と釣りの様子、日本からのアクセス、宿、レンタカー予約方法などについてレポートした。今回はその説明は必要最小限に留め、今年(2017)の現地釣行を中心に時間軸に沿って詳細にレポートする 。現地滞在は4月5日から12日の一週間で、これは例年より 2〜3週間早く行ったことになる 。狙いはスティールヘッド遡上開始時の静かな釣りを堪能することだ。

The fish of a thousand casts. A legendary and ghost-like species that demands hours of patient and relentless pursuit. Fishing for days on huge rivers that look like they may not hold a single fish. For many anglers these are the images that come to mind when they think of steelhead. But there is a place where it is different. Where wild fish by the thousands storm into a stream you can cast all the way across. Where you can actually see steelhead holding in large numbers. Where the opportunity to catch multiple fish in a single day is not unreasonable. That place is the Situk River in Alaska.

千回キャストが必要な魚。何時間もの忍耐と色々な試みが必要で、伝説的で幻のような魚。一匹も釣れないかも知れないような大きな川で、何日間も粘る。多くの釣人が「スティールヘッド釣り」と聞いて，心に抱く釣りのイメージだ。しかし、そのイメージとまったく違う川がある。たくさんの嵐によって、渓流に野生の魚遡上し、気ままにキャストできる。たくさんの定位したスティールヘッドを見ることもできるのだ。一日で数匹釣ることも，まったく不可能でない。それがアラスカのSituk川だ。

Located near the small community of Yakutat, the Situk is a unique and prolific river even by Alaska standards. With 4 species of wild salmon, the largest wild steelhead run in Alaska, resident Rainbows, Cutthroat and Dolly Varden, its no wonder so many anglers venture from far and wide to fish it. As an added bonus, access is as simple and inexpensive as it gets in Alaska. There are two daily 737 Alaska Airlines flights in and out of Yakutat, which makes access from other Southeast towns, Seattle and Anchorage very easy.
While there is excellent fishing for salmon in the Situk River, in this article we’ll keep our focus on the steelhead runs. The Situk gets both a spring and fall/winter run of wild steelhead. The spring steelhead run typically begins mid March, really picks up speed the last week of April and tapers off by mid to late May. The fall run typically begins in November, these fall run steelhead travel through the Situk River and into Situk Lake to over winter and spawn along with the spring runs in May.

Situk川はヤクタット村の小さな集落近くを流れている。アラスカの標準的川と比較しても、ユニークで豊かな川だ。４種類の野生の鮭（実際は５種類：chinook(キングサーモン), sockeye(紅鮭), pink(樺太鱒), chum(白鮭), coho(銀鮭))と、アラスカで最大規模の野生のスティールヘッド、虹鱒、カットスロートとドリーバーデンがいる。それを釣るために、遠くからたくさんの釣り人がやって来るのは不思議ではない。おまけにアラスカへ行ったときのように、川へのアクセスは簡単で安く行える。一日２便(AS66, AS61)のアラスカ航空ボーイング737で、アラスカの他の南東部の町やシアトルから、そしてアンカレッジから簡単にアクセスできる。
Situk川は素晴らしい鮭釣りもできる川でもあるが、この記事では「スティールヘッド」に話を絞る。Situk川では，年２回春と秋（冬）に野生のスティールヘッドの遡上(run)がある。春の遡上は通常３月中旬に始まり、４月下旬にピークを迎え、５月中旬から下旬に向けて減少していく。秋の遡上は１１月に始まり、魚は越冬するためにSituk川上流のSituk湖に向かい、５月の春の遡上間に産卵する。

Over the last fifteen years, on average 8500 Wild Steelhead have returned to the Situk River annually, spawned, and returned back out to sea. There is a weir set up on the lower Situk River, that counts out-migrating steelhead between the beginning of May and the end of June.
Compared to most west coast steelhead rivers the Situk River is relatively small with alders and trees overhanging the river banks, log jam filled runs, and shallow depths. The Situk averages about 90 feet wide and three feet deep, with holes as deep as 12 feet. It is an entirely wadeable river, and because of its relatively small size it is the perfect place for anglers of all abilities.

There are several options when it comes to fishing the Situk River for Spring Steelhead.
First, you can do a day float of the Situk River, either guided or unguided, from the 9 mile bridge down to the lower boat launch. The float is 13.5 miles, taking at least 6-8 hours with good water flows (200-600 CFS). This option allows you to cover the most water, but due to the need to complete the long float, you cannot linger. If water flow levels are low (90-175 CFS), the float could take you anywhere from 10-13 hours. The advantage of floating is the ability to get away from the crowds and cover a lot of water. Once you float past the Situk River Forest Service Cabins (about 3.5 miles down from the 9 mile bridge) the foot access trail disappears and you have a lot of river miles to yourself. You should plan on fishing from sunrise to sunset when floating the Situk River.

If you are interested in floating the Situk River, there are a few operations in Yakutat that rent drift boats, or you can bring your own pack raft or pontoon boat with you. A couple of the places who rent drift boats in Yakutat can be accessed here. Often times, if you are staying at a private lodge or bed and breakfast in Yakutat, those facilities will allow you access to drift boats as well.

Another option is to rent one of the U.S. Forest Service cabins located on the river. Then either hike down or float from the 9 Mile Bridge and fish the area around the cabins. The Forest Service has two cabins about 3.5 miles down from the 9 mile bridge that you can rent here. The two cabins are the Eagle and Raven Cabin and they book up quickly for the very popular April-May season. You can book your cabin reservations up to 6 months in advance and the cabins often fill exactly 6 months out.

Another option for a multi-day float, is to bring your own tents and camp supplies and find a safe place to camp for the night, and continue on the next day. With this choice, you are on your own in ways of food, water, shelter, etc. for the night. If you are amenable to camping in foul weather in wilderness areas, this option gets you the most solitude. If you do decide to camp riverside, we suggest you bring bear/animal protection, and store your food safely at night.

If floating the river is not in the plans, the Situk has great foot access. You can access the Upper Situk River by hiking from the 9 mile bridge upstream or hiking to Situk Lake and fishing your way back downstream. There is a semi-maintained trail that travels riverside from the 9 mile Bridge all the way to Situk Lake. There is a stretch of river about 2 miles up from the 9 Mile Bridge that is an active steelhead spawning area. It is closed to fishing and you should avoid wading it so as not to damage reds or harass the fish. The hike in option is great for anglers who are looking for easily accessible fishing, and enjoy exploring for wild steelhead. Be aware that fishing the Situk from the 9 mile bridge up involves traveling and fishing through some fairly rigorous terrain. One, if not more, river crossings, endless log jams, and terrain that requires a reasonably fit angler are the name of the game.

There is also a trail leading from the 9 mile bridge downstream to the Eagle and Raven Cabins. The nature of the river down from the 9 mile bridge is entirely different from that above the 9 mile bridge. There are long stretches of fast riffles that don’t hold fish followed by pockets of steelhead. Much of the trail is on a steep hill side 20-50 feet above the river so scampering up and down is frequent. The water begins to deepen and become slightly swifter, so crossing the river is done less frequently, and more carefully. When you do have access to the river from the trail, you are often fishing under alders, with less gravel bars to fish from. Fishing from the 9 mile bridge down to the Eagle and Raven cabins tends to be more difficult for anglers on foot, but the rewards can be great!

There is a campground located at the 9 mile bridge, for those anglers who prefer a ‘Do it Yourself’ experience over staying in a lodge. The campground is run on a first come - first serve basis with 6 full campsite areas, one picnic area, and one outdoor toilet. The campsites are well designed for tent camping in soggy weather. They are equipped with a wood platform to keep you out of the mud and a framework for hanging tarps over your tent and cooking area.

One last option for fishing the Situk on foot is to head to the drift boat take-out. You are close to the mouth of the Situk at this point, so the water is larger, and reading it becomes a bit more difficult, but if you are fishing near the take-out on an incoming tide, it is possible to catch some dime bright, hot steelhead just pushing into the Situk. If you get lucky and get a batch of incoming steelhead these fish can often be more aggressive than those that have traveled the 13.5 miles upstream.

When it comes to fishing the Situk River, it is possible to get perfect flows, overcast skies, and no wind.... if you are living in a dream world. In reality, you will more than likely get rained on, snowed on, hailed on, sunny days, and bugs like you can’t believe, so you need to come prepared for anything. That means Gore-Tex outer layers, synthetic mid layers and, wool or fleece base layers. One major thing to remember about fishing the springtime in Southeast Alaska, is that the weather is unpredictable and you never want to get caught outside in nothing but your blue jeans and cotton t-shirt, because you will never get warm and dry after that… Cotton kills!

-The absolute best Gore-Tex wading jacket you can afford.
-2 next to skin synthetic shirts
-2 fleece or wool sweaters
-2 pairs of long underwear- synthetic
-1 pairs warm fleece pants
-4-5 pairs of wool or synthetic socks (You can never have too many!)
-1 pair ‘camp pants’

One thing to note while planning your spring steelheading adventure on the Situk; if the city of Yakutat has had a snow-wealthy winter, it is possible that you won’t be able to reach the river at all. The gravel road leading to the 9 mile bridge isn’t plowed during the winter. Road crews wait for spring and start plowing. That being said, if you get snowed out you can still fish Tawah Creek and Lost River in the Yakutat area for cutthroat trout.

As you begin deciding what flies and beads to tie or buy before your trip, it will be good to check out the river flows. If the water is running high, you will want to bring extra split shot, a fast sink tip line and heavy flies. If the water levels are low, you will want to bring smaller flies or beads, with nymphing in mind. If you are not sure bring both!

Chasing steelhead on the Situk is prime the last week of April thru the first tree weeks of May. Go to patterns include Dolly Llama #2 in black/white, pink/purple, pink/white, pink/black, pink/steelhead blue and black/red.  Other really really good patterns include Steelhead Glo Bugs #2 (Garcia, pink/chartreuse, purple/chartreuse and orange,) Fish Emission Eggs #6 (salmon egg, trans pink, OR cheese and flame #4,) Liquid Wrench (red/orange, fuchsia/pink,) and 907 Leech or LE Egg Sucking Leech.  If these patterns are not found on our site or are temporarily out of stock, please check with us.  Often we will be getting fresh stock through out the late winter and early spring.

Beads are evermore gaining popularity among steelheaders and can be deadly on the Situk.  The best sizes and colors are often dictated by weather and water conditions.  General rule is to fish big in high and off colored water and go smaller when the conditions clear and drop.  Go to colors are pinks, reds and oranges, but don't count out blues and chartreuses.  When steelhead see lots stuff on the warm side of the color scale, going to the opposite side can be deadly.  I often find myself fishing more solid/opaque beads during dark and cloudy days and more translucent/transparent on brighter days. There are some really good beads that have a lighter degree of opacity/translucency (cloudy) that can be dynamite too.  Check out our Guide Model Steelhead Beads.  Here you will find lots of the beads/colors that we like to fish.  Most of these beads are offered only in one or two  of the larger sizes (10mm, 12mm, 14mm.) Guide Model Trout Beads which are offered in 6mm and 8mm can be good for when the water gets lower (Dark Roe, Tangerine, Ruby are good!).  Lastly Mottled Beads and Glow Beads have some really good colors that come in size 6-14mm.  Most of the beads in our Steelhead Bead Selection come from these last two categories.

Forest Highway 10 stretches from Yakutat, to the Dangerous River (29 miles), crossing the famous Situk River (pronounced see-tuk) at the Nine Mile Bridge. Most effort at this access point targets the spring steelhead and Dolly Varden fisheries. This is also the drop-off point for anglers floating the Situk River, a popular 13.5 mile trip. Many anglers fish seasonally for steelhead, and coho and king salmon near the mouth of the Situk River.Tawah Creek runs parallel to the coast for approximately 5 miles before joining the Lost River. It is accessible from the bridge on Cannon beach road (R.E.L. bridge) or by turning off of the Lost River road approximately 2 miles before the Lost River Bridge. Coho salmon are the big attraction in the Lost River and Tawah Creek systems from late-August through mid-October.

There are a number of remote fishing sites accessible by airplane. Situk Lake and Mountain Lake are accessible by trail or float plane when available. There are several very remote but very productive systems at the extremes of the area. To the east, the Italio, Akwe, and East Alsek Rivers, and to the west, the Tsiu River (pronounced sigh-you), which are known mainly for their coho runs. Check with local air taxi's for charter service to these outlying systems.

Freshwater Fishing Along The Yakutat Roadside

The 13.5 mile section of Situk River from the Nine Mile Bridge to the Lower Landing can be floated in approximately 6 to 8 hours, but so many holes beg to be fished that it is not uncommon to be on the river from dawn until dusk. This can be a lengthy period during the extended daylight hours that occur in the spring and summer. Approximately half of the anglers boating the river take a small outboard motor along to provide for a faster trip through "dead" water or to make up for time spent fishing when darkness begins to fall. Those who prefer a quiet day of drifting usually head out earlier in the morning and paddle with more determination. Others anglers stay at one of the Forest Service cabins or camp along the river. Be advised; warm spring mornings can turn into snowstorms by afternoon on the Yakutat Foreland, so pack some extra gear "just in case."

Situk River averages about 90 feet wide and 3 feet deep. There are holes 10 feet deep, but most of the river can be waded with chest-high waders. There are good fishing areas both above and below the Middle Situk Cabins, but there is no developed trail system. Most people wade along the shoreline, especially during mid-summer when the water is generally too shallow for motor powered boats.

９マイル橋から河口近くのLower LandingまでSituk川は13.5マイルあり、6～８時間で川下り出来るが、非常にたくさんの良い釣り場があるので、夜明けから夕方遅くまで川で釣りするのは不思議ではない。これは春と夏に起こる、日が長くなることによる。ボートの釣り人の約半分は、流れの遅い水域を速く旅するため、また日が暮れ始めたときに、釣りの時間を取り戻すために、小さな動力付きボートを持ってくる。静かな釣りが好きなボート釣り人は早朝に出掛け、固い決意でボートを漕ぐ。ある釣り人は森林サービスのキャビンの１つに泊まったり、川沿いにキャンプしたりする。アドバイスをすると、ヤクタットでは春の早朝が暖かくても、午後に吹雪きになることもある。だから、万が一のために、特別な装備を持っていくべきだ。Situk川は平均して川幅が90フィート,水深3フィートある。水深10フィートのホールもあるが、ほとんどはウェーダで渡河できる。中流のキャビンの前後にいい釣り場があるが、整備されたトレイルはない。大半の釣り人は浅瀬にそってウェイデングする。特に、船外機付きボートでは浅すぎる季節の真夏では。

A U.S. Forest Service trail begins near the Nine Mile Bridge that leads 4.5 miles upstream to Situk Lake, where there is a Forest Service cabin. Sport fishing in Situk Lake is not usually very productive, but excellent angling can be had for sockeye salmon and Dolly Varden during the late summer off the inlet from Mountain Lake. The trail to the Situk cabin continues another 2 miles to Mountain Lake which can provide excellent angling for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the spring (after the ice goes out) and during the summer. The shoreline of Mountain Lake is very steep, and access to the head of the lake is virtually impossible on foot.

Another trail leads 3.5 miles downstream from the Nine Mile Bridge to the Middle Situk Cabin. It is necessary to cross the Old Situk Creek several miles down the trail so hip boots are recommended. The lower sections of the Old Situk can provide some fast action for Dolly Varden in the fall, which has saved more than one trip when heavy rains have flooded other systems.The Lost River Road provides access to the Lost River/Tawah Creek systems as well as the Situk River near its mouth at the Lower Landing (this is the pick-up point for anglers drifting the Situk River). The Lost River passes under the Lost River Road approximately 6 miles from the airport and slowly meanders down to the ocean several miles downstream. Very high tides will cause the Lost River to back up all the way to the Lost River road as well as flood the parking lot at the Situk Landing which causes problems for those who are not aware.The other major road leads 4.5 miles west from town providing access to the Ankau Lagoon system, a maze-like lagoon that features reversing tidal rapids and is best known to anglers for coho fishing in the fall.

PLEASE NOTE: The land beyond the Ankau Bridge is privately owned. The road to the right at the end of the bridge leads to the community cemetery. Grave sites are located throughout the area and deserve respect. This area should be considered "off limits" to vehicle traffic.

米国農務省林野部管轄のトレイルは９マイル橋近くから始まり、上流のSituk湖へ4.5マイル延びていて、湖には同省のキャビン（小屋）がある。Situk湖の釣りは通常それほどたくさん釣れないが、うまい釣り人なら晩夏にMountain Lakeのインレットで紅鮭とドリーバーデンが釣れるだろう。Situkのキャビンからトレイルを２マイルでMountain lakeに着く。ここは春（雪が溶けてから）と夏に、虹鱒とドリーバーデンがよく釣れる。Mountain lakeの湖岸は大変急峻で、湖の先端へのアクセスは徒歩ではほとんど不可能だ。もう１つのトレイルは９マイル橋から下流3.5マイルの中流域のSitukキャビンに繋がっている。トレイルを数マイル下ると、Old Situk川を渡る必要があるので、胴長ブーツを推薦する。Old Situk川の下流域は秋にドリーバーデンに速攻？を与え、豪雨で他の水系が洪水になったとき１つ以上の旅を守ることができる。Lost River道路は、Situk川の河口近くのLower Landing(ボート搬入・搬出)と同様、Lost River/Tawah Creekへアクセスできる。Lost Riverは空港から約６マイルLost River道路の下を通って、ゆっくり曲がりくねって海に流れ出している。非常に高い満潮はLost RiverをLost River 道路の方へ氾濫する、またLower Landingに駐車している車を水浸しにして、それを知らない釣り人を困らせる。

他の道路は町から西に４．５マイルAnkan礁湖へアクセス(ACストアを越えて左折し、砂利道を道なりに30分進む)できる。満潮の逆流は迷図のようなになり、秋のコーホの釣人にはよく知られている。

注意：Ankau橋を渡った向こう側の土地は私有地である。橋を渡った右方向の道は町の墓地である。墓地は広く配置されているので、十分配慮するように。またこのエリアは車進入禁止だ。
